My Doc says Serevent has been taken off the market. My pharmacist
tells me that a discus is out, but not in the US. Is this true?

The Glaxo website says the discus is available in the US.

Thanks

I've been getting the discus for like 5 or 6 months now. I don't like
it, mostly cause the dispenser is too large to fit in my purse which is
a pain. So your doctor and pharmacist are both wrong.

Why would you carry Serevent in your purse?  AFAIK, Serevent is a long
acting, use twice a day, med.  Says right on it not to use for quick
relief.

Because I travel A LOT and don't want to forget it at home. Even on a
normal day I'm not apt to be home at the times I need to take it. And my
insurance will not pay for 2 and you have to used each one within 6
weeks of opening the foil pack according to directions, so 2 wouldn't
get used equally.

I carry my Aerobid, my Serevent and my Albuteral whicn means I need a
larger purse than I like.

I do the same thing when I am working, because I work approximately
1.5 hrs from my home, and do not want to risk being without any of my
meds when the time comes to take them, especially the ones that are
IMPERATIVE to be taken at the same time daily, which the Serevent
Diskus is one of.

In the US the MDI (puffer) is off the market while the discus has been out
for some time now (like years).

I am still getting MDI from the VA with no
reference to the discus but anyway they run about a year behind on modern
medicine.

Myunderstanding is that it is not being manufactured anymore.
Presumably they will eventually run out. According to my experiences
there will be little notice.

Do you know why the MDI has been taken off the market?  Is it a safety issue?
Is salmeterol still available as a constituent of seretide in the US?
Are there any safety issues with seretide?

It's creating a hole in the ozone layer.

It is part of the generalized ban on CFC's (ozone hole and all that).
Sooner or later all the CFC based MDI's will be phased out and
replaced by dry powder devices or other propellants such as HFA.

The Serevent diskus is available in the US.  I am using it at the
present time.
