I woke up Monday morn coughing my head off and felt like my chest was
on fire.
Called the doctor Tuesday afternoon as I was not having any breathing
problems. I was running a 101 temp. Doc wasn't in nor his nurse
practioner and the other docs were busy with patients, so I got one of
the nurses and explained my symptoms, deep bronchial cough and the
temp and aching all over (had my flu shot last year), So was told to
come in Wednesday morn and to take modrin and drink lots of liquids.
Saw Nurse Practioner and told her my symptoms and she checked my chest
front and back and the lungs clear. No color in my sputum, but
bringing up lots of thick mucus from chest and nose. She prescribed
course of pred but no antibiotics and she took my temp and it was
normal. Had taken it at 6:30 a.m. and it was 99.1 then.
Came home got my med and also she subscribed Singulair to take after I
was better. I take 500 mg of Advair and albuterol and an
antihistimine.
So, now I am very tired, running 100 temp and if I lay down on right
side on raised pillows, I start to hear a crackling sound/wheeze? when
I am laying down and start to cough alot of phlem and it keeps me
awake with the coughing and the sound. My back of my back where the
lungs/muscles are so sore when I start to cough and my chest is sore
with the coughing. She asked if I have any pain and I don't just the
soreness when I cough. Of course, when I went to the doc the sound in
my chest wasn't there!
So is the a deep bronchitis? I have no tightness in my chest nor feel
like I am having asthma. Anyone have this before and what can you do
for the sound and cough? Can I take Tussin safely?
Thanks,
Michelle in Texas, where the weather is crazy this year, cold, hot,
big freeze for two days then fog, fog, drizzle during the night and
early morn.

Cough, even without wheezing, can be a sign of asthma so whether an
asthmatic comes in coughing one wonders if it is fromt he asthma (and
whether treating the asthma is the way to get rid of it). However,
people without asthma do get severe coughs so that is not always it.
Usually, but not always, if the coughing is from asthma there will be
some sensation of chest tightness and nto breathing as well as usual.
I'm having a hard time telling from you post if things have gotten
significantly worse since your visit yesterday or if you have just been
feeling this crappy since then. From the sound of it the diagnosis of
viral syndrome/"flu-like"syndrome/viral bronchitis may be reasonable.
However if the feeling lousy is a lot worse, the chest sounds are new,
the sputum production significantly increased, you are having more
chest pain, and you are more short of breath than yesterday (i.e. your
a lot worse despite the prednisone) it could mean that you have
pneumonia that was not initially apparent (often it isn't) and should
check back in with the doctor's office (or ER).
To answer your question - Yes, you can take tussin. Suppressing the
cough will probably help with the soreness.

Hello,
It is probably bronchitis. I advise you to see a doctor. In some cases,
bronchitis can lead to Pneumonia so your doctor might want to give you
medication to prevent this from happening. I am not a doctor.
