Hello all....Its been awhile since I posted ...seems the 2 stays at the
hospital and home nIV therapy has ridded me of mrsa thats a good thing
...the last hospital stay I was given zyvox, avalox and medral while there
through IV for 7 days then pill form of zyvox , avalox , and prednisone for
an additional 10 days ..after which prednisone reduced to 40 mg daily with
no other drugs....thw breathing for the next 4 weeks was free flowing with
no problems then I started to congest which increased over the next couple
weeks to where I'm at now....I need to use mucomyst and duoneb every 4 to 5
hours or I'm unable to clear lungs of thick mucous that is slightly yellow
but tests show all normal in sputem...My doc put me back on bactrim ds for a
week didn't help then on avalox 10 days that I'm 6 days into with no
change....the neb drugs enable me to clear and breath ok for about 4 hours
However lungs wake me up at nite due to congestion.....My question remains
Why do I get such long term clearing when using zyvox, unless there is
bacteria.....But then also why does sputum test show nothing abnormal????

I would discuss changing the mucomyst to high doses of oral guaifenesin. The
mucomyst is sometimes used to break up secretions but it also has a tendancy
to cause bronchoconstriction. Most refernces advise fiving it with albuterol
even of the person is not wheezing because of this.
It may be that you get better on the Zyvox (an antobiotic) because you do
have an infection. Then again, it may be that you also go on prednisone
every time you go on Zyvox.

On anti-biotics that cease to work:
Levaquin stopped working for me some months back. That's ok. There are
still a number of drugs in that class fully effective for the bugs I
get.
My infection of two months ago no longer fell victim to Zithromax.
Using Ketek (linithromycin sp?) another macrolid. But it's a ten day
deal. And c.$120 for the ten day course if you don't have insurance.
Ketek sports a long list of drug interactions, including Lipitor and
theophyline. And Viagra hardy-har!
But the Ketek does it, just like the azithromycin did for me for so many
years.
Good luck keeping ahead of your micro-oppressors, Michael.
And everyone please try and have a happy Christmas and a joyous
Chanukka.
And Kwanza.
