Hi, I have sympatoms of asthma, short of breath, coughing (at night) and
feeling as though someone is sitting on my chest. My doctor has not yet
tested me for asthma, yet these symptoms have been going on for the past
half a year...any suggestions. It has been getting worse rapidly.

Maria,
Like you said - you have symptoms. You may eventually be diagnosed as
"asthmatic". This is a "portmanteau" term used to describe people who have
difficulty breathing - like you, and like us. The actual
physiological/biochemical caused are many, varied and not wholly understood.
This NG is as good a place as any to inform yourself of your condition.
Treat all supportive and negative comments with the same degree of
scepticism. Try to understand the point of view of the single-minded
zealots, ignore the foulmouthed bad language, and try to understand the
(apparently) jaded and jaundiced view of those of us who have lived with
asthma for half a century or more, and have lived, seen and survived (thank
God) it all before :o)
Welcome to our ranks, I pray your memebership (for reasons of ill-health)
will be short.

You symptoms are typical of asthma as well as a few other things. Only a
personal history and physical combined with some testing can be more
specific. I think it is time to be tested. He may also decide to test for
other things, like heart disease, but it is definitely time to figure it
out.
