I went to the Dr. today (Lung Doctor) for a follow up from my last attack 2
weeks ago. He did a Chest Xray and, a breathing test. Both were good, but
it dosent explain why my rib cage hurts when i breath deep i can breath
shallow breaths okay, but my chest still feels tight. Since my tests were
okay, he gave me some Cough medicine with Codein to help with the coughing.
He also wants me to see an allergist.
I asked for my pain meds to be refiled and, he wouldnt do it, he told me to
go to my PCP for the pain meds. I dont understand why, he is the one that
originally prescribed them for me..........I really like this Doctor but the
last couple times i have seen him he seems like hes changing the way he
cares for his patients. He was my favorite doctor.
Has anyone had their tests come back normal and, still have trouble and
basically feel like sh.t.

If I were in your shoes, I would go see a naturopathic doctor (or an
alternative doctor) and find out if I have hidden food sensitivities
that may be triggering my asthma. I haven't had an asthma attack in
years because I found out that corn and dairy products were triggering
my asthma. Conventional doctors are clueless about this.

Yes, in cases where a bacterial infection is causing asthma
(www.asthmastory.com), but I really don't think you'd convince
your doctors of this.

Chest wall pain is common with asthma and emphysema and will not show up on
any tests. I think it is because the muscles have to work harder to get the
air in and out.
When to use narcotics is always a tough issue surrounded by controversy. It
is sometimes used in "pleuritic" chest pain but docs are usually reluctant
to embark on long term courses with no identifiable pathology. FWIW the
cough syrup with codiene does have a narcotic in it so he was not really
refusing - just downgrading a bit. I would hope that they are taking
advantage of other meds like ibuprofen and naprosyn which will also treat
the root of the pain (inflammation) rather than just cover it up (assuming
you have no contraindications to them).
If you are still having symptoms the allergist sounds like a good idea. I
certainly hope you are not grading the docs based only or mostly on their
willingness to use narcotics.

I have a history of Plerisy, that is why my doctor prescribed Narcotics. I
had a influsion (SP) in my left lower lobe. According to my X-ray that has
sense healed. Still having the Rib pain and the breathing problem i feel
its still active. Actually i have been taking Advil because i have RA in
my hands. No i'm not grading my Dr.s on the willingness to use narcotics,
not having pain meds when i'm in agony is somthing i dont enjoy facing.,
when i have a episode i cant laydown, i can bearly situp.

In addition to naturopathic doctors there are alternative doctors that
may help you. There is a website www.acam.org. I think it stands for
the American College of Advanced Medicine. They can help you find an
alternative doctor in your area if you input the state or zip code.
Delayed Food sensitivities can trigger eczema, psoriasis, migraines,
hayfever, runny nose, fatigue, joint pain, sleep disorders, acne, and
many other health problems. Reactions to foods can occur 72 hours after
you eat a food. Since I am sensitive to corn I don't eat most processed
foods because corn is in most processed foods (High Fructose Corn
Syrup, Corn Starch, Distilled Vinegar, MSG, and many other food
additives). Soy, Wheat, and Dairy are used to make many food additives
that you don't recognize. You may still be sensitive to them and don't
know it. Blood Test for Delayed Food Sensitivities (or Allergies) vary
in accuracy. Adjusting your diet to find out what foods you are
sensitive to is the most accurate means. An alternative or Naturopathic
doctor can show you how. Good Luck.

If you have pleurisy and RA then the RA is probably the cause.
Perhpas you should talk to your rheumatologist about it.

YES I have experienced this recently!! i was having tightness in chest, and
pain in ribcage in the back, boy did it hurt like hell!!! I could barely
move, just to walk up steps was an effort. I ended up going to the emergency
room and had ekg, chest xray, blood work done all normal. They even did xray
on my ribs to make sure they werent broken. All normal, but had inflammation
in ribs and muscles due to asthma. They gave me a nebulizer treatment, with
a steroid in it. And said take ibuprofin for the pain. Its been since
lastweek, i have been taking the nebulizer daily, which has been helping.
also ibuprofin daily. the pain has gone away for now.
Are you on a steroid? i take advair 250/50 which is supposed to help with
inflammation. also the nebulizer helps with the asthma. your rib cage hurts
due to your lungs expanding trying to breathe, also coughing causes your
muscles to be strained. it sucks i know!! if you have a nebulizer, use it,it
will help your lungs and your attacks will be less frequent. Good Luck
