Hi All,
My son Aiden, 7 months, has developed a harsh sounding cough (loud,
dry, that can be heard across the house). We first noticed it when he
cought a cold at 5 months. It was a wet cough, but after the
congestion cleared up, the cough became this loud type that lingered
for a week and all was fine. Now he has cought another cold, but no
wet cough this time. Just this dry cough has returned. We think that
the cold triggers it. He's been seen by a couple of doctors, and they
think it could be asthma or allergies, or just some inflamation that
could go away by the time he is 1 or 2. they wanna try pulmicort or
Prelone. They say if that stuff works, then it could indicate Asthma.
The harsh sound seems to be produced from the upper chest and not
something deeper in the lungs. His lungs have always sounded good when
listened to and no wheezing. and he doesn't cough at night either. We
have tried xopenex but I can't tell for sure it does much. Anyway, I
hope someone can deduce something from what I have put together here
and suggest something, or share a similar experience.
Thanks,
Sean

G'day Sean, I am not a medical person but have spent many years
tracking these kinds of problems with little ones. What I repeatedly
found was that the child rarely had problems until ceasing
breastfeeding and wholly transferring to a formula based kind of
feeding. The coughing or sniffling problems usually established within
the four week period following, in some cases this was significantly
more profound when the mother also introduced other dairy based food
simultaneously.
In many cases moderate to severe eczema was also present.
Reflux involvment could also be a problem.
In virtually every case the baby formula was found to be cowsmilk based
even though the producers were averse to confirming this.
Switching immediately to a soy or other derived foodbase was often
helpful, providing it was quickly done.
In cases where the problem had substantially manifested, it involved
major ongoing problems with other compounding allergy affecteng
substances.
Immediate examination of all food items that the child is exposed to is
absolutely neccessary, you will likely find the cattle derivatives are
most of the problem.
Keeping the child sensibly cool at all times helps substantially.
It would be in your interest to read Professor Gary Huffnagle's
information regarding the adverse effects of antibiotics in these
cases. (google his name)
Where this problem is treated with antibiotics the children most often
develop asthma.
Cheers, Merlin.

I may be stoned for this, but what the heck. If the onset of
your son's cough was a cold, you might want to check out
www.asthmastory.com. He wouldn't be the first baby who was
diagnosed with asthma, which may actually be caused by bacteria
lingering from an illness. I know two children (one of whom
started with a barking type of cough following illness at the age
of two) who have had their asthma resolved because it was caused
by bacteria, and finally (after several years) treated with
weekly doses of antibiotics for a longer than usual period (six
to twelve weeks). My own asthma was resolved after 33 years,
when the bacteria was treated two + years ago. Look at the
asthma research section, and also the files on the homepage, on
the lower left there for more information. I'm the forum
moderator on that site - and NO - nobody is selling anything, and
it isn't a scam.

your right I don't buy that . I can leave my city and asthma gets better , I
can come back to this polluted pit of hell and my asthma returns which
qualifies me for being too crazy to leave. Like I said before my city is ok
if not for that. I move I immediately will have to pay for rent and I don't
even make 14 k. Then I would not have space of a house. So its like I am
against a rock and hard place. No for many people the correlation between
pollution and asthma is right there in writing. For instance inner city
youth get more pollution. Compare the youth in Hawaii to asthma rates to
inner city youth say in my city. It would prove everything there is to prove
about associations. Our press keeps most of this from the people.

You really should read research before not buying into things.
Asthma is caused by different things. You want to put all your
eggs in the pollution basket.
