Hello all,
I am interested in pursuing a career in plumbing, but me being
an asthmatic and all is giving me some serious doubts about this career
path, with all of the dust plumbers deal with every day.
Is anybody here a plumber, or has anybody met an asthmatic plumber
before?  I suppose I'd have to wear a face mask to work in order to
survive...do you think it's worth it?

Forget it.  Plenty of other trades/professions.

Sure there's money in plumbing: it'll all go to the doctors.---Jack

Such as?  I could be an electrician, but my maths is terrible,
plasterers have similar health issues as plumbers.  You name me at least
3 trades/professions which do not require a degree that will get me the
£40k+ that plumbing will get me... without a huge demand for physical
labour.

It's true.  Amost no one makes as much as a plumber!

Since you have asthma, coming to an asthma group to help you to make
plans for the future makes a lot of sense, Dan.

There are a lot of things asthmatics can do.  Everyone of us has a
different degree of severity, and different things that can trigger an
attack.

One of the fellows who contributes to this group, but not lately,  spent
some months recently, nearly a year, if I'm not mistaken, at the war in
Iraq.  He was part of the personnel in one of our tanks.

On the other hand some of us don't dare go near a fresh construction
site fo fear of an allergic reaction to one or more of the building
materials---or their dust.

Dan, now while you're young is the time to start evaluating what you can
and can't do.  And to get advice, not from "experts" but from people in
the same boat.

I hope one  or more of our posters here can furnish you with particular,
specific information.  You've asked.  And you certainly deserve it.
