Big A,
If you are doing long term antibiotics, it may take up to 2 months to see an
improvement. So you take your regular asthma meds until you find you are
more in control and then you can go off them. One by one. When I did it, I
took a month between each drug before I tried going down. A few people
report feeling better after just a week or two, but if you read at Jim
Quinlan's site, you will see that most report it takes awhile.
Also, not everyone is helped, so you want to stay on your meds in case you
are not in the group with an ongoing infection. Good luck!

If you're using 10 mgs a day on a regular basis you can't stop. You
can use the azithromycin with it---Jack

Hiya -
If you are still struggling while on 10mg, you should be on a higher
dosage. I know that there are a bunch of side effects associated with
prednisone, believe me. Not breathing, however, is much worse for your
body than any side effect of any medication. While on prednisone you
should be crystal clear, so that you can see how to taper, eventually.
I have taken oral prednisone since about 1988. At one point I was
taking almost 80mg a day. Thats what it took, so that's what I took. I
am now down to 4mg a day. I'm always hoping to be steroid free, but I'm
not willing to wheeze to do it.
Yes, you can take the Zpack with prednisone. My doc usually recommends
that particular antibiotic because he feels it works the best with
asthma meds. I'm unclear as to whether you are doing a short term
antibiotic deal, like for a specific infection, or you are beginning the
long-term antibiotic treatment that some here in the newsgroup
(including myself) have tried. Either way, getting your breathing under
control has to be the main objective. Please talk to your doc and find
out what it will take for you to breathe easy.

Hi - thanks for all the info. I am currently on a burst of prednisone
- i just got out of the emergency room last friday for another terrible
breathing episode. I started at 60 mg last week and am going down - i
feel awesome right now. My doc was not open to the antibiotic
treatment so I went on my own and bought the z packs over the web. My
doc kept taking me to 10 mg on the tapers of prednisone but that does
not hold - i think i will stay at 20 mg until - hopefully - the z
packs kick in. My Doc but me Biaxin about a month ago at 250mg a day -
this did nothing of course - too little of dose - I tried it anyway.
It probably made the bacteria that much more resistant. I did test
positive for the chlam pne. bacteria in late March. thanks again,
big A

It sounds to me like you need a new doctor. Is this a pulmonary doctor
or a GP? It also sounds like you may be tapering the prednisone too
quickly. My pulmonary doc has a system in place for me, so I know how
to taper myself. I have to be in the "green zone" of my peak flow for a
week. Then I can go down .05mg. I then make sure I stay in the green
zone for another week. Then I can go down again. As soon as my peak
flow goes into the "yellow zone" I have to stop and wait. If I don't go
out of the yellow zone in 3 days or go further down into my "red zone" I
have to go back up to the last dosage of where I was in the green. Only
if I go into the red zone I have to call the doc.
I would seriously think about finding a new doctor. A doctor that
listens to you and works with you is worth his/her weight in gold. It
is really important for you to have a doc you trust.

It is a shame, in the light of 15 years of study, that your doctor is not
open to suggestions that your condition could be improved by antibiotics. I
hope that you also will find that there is an answer and I think you did the
right thing taking matters into your own hands. Everyone has to have hope.
And those of us with this infection have to face the possibility that we
will deteriorate into COPD.
There sure are many studies supporting that C and M Pneumoniae are
contributors to asthma at PubMed in the last year - too bad your doc
couldn't figure that out. I didn't convince my PCP or Resp doc either this
time 2 years ago when I was going thru this. I was, in the end, helped by a
Dermatologist. My current PCP is a believer. I felt I had to leave the old
one, a not helpful guy in this respect, behind. I can read Medline as well
as he can, actually.
