I tested positive for the clamydia pne bacteria a few weeks ago.  My
Doc put me on a Z pack first, then put me on 250MG/day of Biaxon for
the long run.  Will this work?  I can't get a real deep breath yet but
once I started taking the antibiotic I have been coughing up and
blowing out much garbage.  Also, I have been very wheezy since taking
the antibiotic. Is this loosening up stuff??   I have also been on 15
mg of prednisone for many moons, hopefully I can get off this soon.
Thanks again for any advice.

yeah, you will deffinetely want to get off the dose of prednisone you are
on.  I can just see all your intestines wilting up like dead flowers and
your bones turning to sand.  Well, maybe not quite that scenario, but pray
tell, why weren't you put on a burst dose of pred?
Sounds like the Z-pack is doing it's job... be careful as you may need more
then one round of it.
Hope you have a miraculous recovery.

Hiya -

You've been through a lot haven't you!!  Hopefully this is clearing you up.

I know you want to get off of prednisone, but please, do not do it
prematurely.  I've taken it for years, and yes, the side effects are a
pain, but the positive far outweighs the negative, at least in my case.
Breathing being the positive.  If you have been on pred for a while,
you have to taper off very slowly to avoid a return of symptoms, and
also to prevent bad muscle aches, which can happen if you don't taper.

I hope that you get through this quickly and on to better things - good
luck!

Life is uncertain....eat dessert first!

I wonder why he is switching from Zithromax to Biaxin (and
why he is using a half dose).

The popular opinion in the asthmastory.com site is that the
Biaxin takes longer to work. It is usually taken twice daily
so the once a day thing is kind of perplexing. Do you have
bad kidneys?

Thanks for all the feedback.  I have been on pred. bursts for approx a
year and a half; but basically 15 mg a day since December.  I have not
really felt any side effects yet from the pred. I do not have bad
kidneys either, I think that my Doctor is unsure of the antibiotic
therapy.  I will talk to him and tell him that I need be on a bigger
dose.  Will this work?  What should I tell him?  500 mg of Biaxin a
day?  1000 mg once a week?  or get on a Zpack once a week?  Thank You!!

Sometimes half doses of antibiotics are given to prevent an
infection that keeps comming back (like in chronic
bronchitis or urinary tract infections). If you are treating
an active infection - which is what I think you would have
to call it here - full doses should be used and it is really
just duration that is in question with long courses not
uncommon for things like prostate infections and sinusitis.

There have been studies using doxycycline, Baiaxin,
Zithromax, and others for chronic chlamydia and mycoplasma
infections. The generally have run for several months at a
time and the results for erythromycin and doxycyline have
been disappointing (despite supposedly covering the
appropriate organisms). Biaxin has shown some success but
not quite as much as Zithromax. The correlates well with
anecdotal reprots that say Biaxin can work but usually takes
longer.

The regimen that seems tohave the most data and the most
popularity is to that 500mg of Zithromax (azithromycin)
daily for three days as a loading dose then 750 mg weekly
for a total of 12 weeks. It works out to 39 250 mg tablets.

Biaxin has a much shorter half life than Zithromax so it
must be taken twice daily unless you are taking the
sustained release tablet or have kidney problems - usually
250-500mg twice a day (most commonly 500mg).
