Couple donates $5 million to clinic Houston, TX, Mar. 26 (UPI) -- A Houston couple has donated $5 million to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center for a six-story clinic and research facility in Denver. The building will be named the Iris and Michael Smith Clinics and Laboratories in honor of the benefactors, the Houston Chronicle reported Saturday. The building will house patient services, such as adult clinics, a rehabilitation department and basic research laboratories. The building is scheduled to be completed in late 2006. Michael Smith is the chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport LNG Development. He is a trustee and former board member of the Denver research center. Iris Smith is the chairwoman, president and treasurer of the Kaitar Foundation, which has donated to many Colorado charities. The nonprofit National Jewish Medical and Research Center, founded in 1899, is the only center in the United States devoted entirely to respiratory, allergic and immune system diseases, including asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, severe allergies, AIDS, cancer and autoimmune diseases such as lupus. And a brilliant medical centre it is. I was a patient there once meself.
