Does that little Oreck table top device generate ozone ?

Yes.

The Oreck machine is a table top electronic air cleaner, (or,
electrostatic precipitator, if you prefer).  Same idea as what
some folks put on their furnace.

I carried them in my store for a a short while, but never sold
any.  Most of my customers have quite severe chemical problems,
and the Oreck just adds to their problem.  Oreck's excellent
sales pitch didn't sound so good after I took a loss on these
units.

No matter how clean you keep the cell in these machines, you can
smell the ozone from a few feet away.

Definitely not recommended for any type of allergy, asthma,
respiratory problem, or chemical sensitivity.  Their only
somewhat-saving grace is that they will chew up tobacco smoke
pretty good.

Basically, it's something to stay away from.

And thank you. I think we need more like you. SOBs using up our
air............ shooting them is the perfect answer.

Pre-Filter:
Fan draws in dirty air and air filter traps large particles such as
hair, lint, etc.

Ionizer:
Electricity is used to positively charge small particles such as dust,
smoke and pollen.

Collector:
A series of alternately charged collection plates attract and lock in
dirt particles like a powerful magnet.

Charcoal Odor Absorber:
Activated charcoal absorbs common household odors. (replace
periodically).

Negative Ion Generator:
Emits negative ions which help to freshen stale air.

this are the component of that particular device.......

the answer to table top is a BIG yes it produces OZONE , per EPA studies and
other government agencies.....Ion produces a little bit of OZONE not as much
as the OZONE GENERATOR but still produces OZONE....stay away from OZONE
GENERATORS please.

Surely will.

so let me ask , does purifiers like Sharper Image breeze give off ozone?
thanks allot

according to them:

Ionic Breeze? complies with U.S. safety requirements for low ozone emission
(less than 50 parts per billion) as tested

and they are using

UV : Germicidal UVC is at 254 nanometers which the correct wave length

downfall is it only covers: 500 square-foot room

You betcha..

That's what that odour is that comes off ionizers;  some
hucksters refer to it as
"fresh-outdoor-waterfall-lightning-uplifting" odour and say that
that's a good thing.  It's ozone.  Granted, not much ozone, but,
if you can smell it, it's bad for you.

It's too bad the truth-in-advertising laws don't have decent
teeth.  If they did, outfits like Sharper Image, (and the other
ionizer manufacturers), wouldn't be able to claim their machines
are "air cleaners" or "air purifiers".

Well, they are technically part of the well known class
(mostly used in industry) of electrostatic dust precipitators (EDPs).
They do remove small particles more efficiently than any other
method (of cause, the amount of air that is being purified depends
on the device spec, and in this case the troughput is not very large).

And yes, they produce ozone. So they remove one polutant and introduce
a little of another. Just like everything else in life, you have
to chose from two evils.

They use corona discharge for 2 purposes
1) as means to blow air through the filters
2) to charge dust particles to cause their attraction to colelctor plates

Anything that uses corona discharge is producing ozone, because it
involves formation of plasma around the corona electrode.

Specificaly Sharper Image devices probably produce more ozone than
regular electrostatic dust precipitators (EDP), because later use the
discharge only for 2) but not for 1) (to make them noiseless).

Industrial EDPs are using fans to blow air through them - more noisy
but less corona-discharge current needed.

Now, I am sure Sharper Image made all possible optimizations to
reduce amount of ozone produced, but it can never be completely
eliminated.

Yes, it does, and not only that but Sharper Image sued Consumer
Reports for reporting on the bogus advertising done by Sharper
Image and they ended up having to pay the $525,000 Consumer
Reports incurred in defending themselves against libel.  You can
get more details here:

Thanks for everyones help, it saved me the cost of buying this product. I
certainly don't want to add ozone to my room.
