I'd like some opinions about this please.
For 15 years I've been fight a losing battle with chronic severe back
pain that all the doctors have told me is arthritis and all the
arthritis medicine I've ever taken in my life has never made my back
feel even a little bit better. Aspirin helps more than anything. When I
had to take a colonoscopy a few months ago I had to drink some stuff to
clean me out first and it seemed to make my back feel better so one day
when I was in so much pain nothing seemed to help I decided to drink
salt water because that stuff tasted salty and helped ease the pain and
I was ready to try anything and the salt water helped.

I told my nutritionalist about it and she said salt is an electrolyte
that helps electricity flow through the body.

It helps a lot but not not 100% but when pain medicine won't do it
alone this does help.

What do you think about it? Maybe it can help you feel better. Maybe
I'm in so much pain I'm just dreaming and wishing it helps.

Hhhhhm,  Who is to say???   This is the first time I have read anything like
your post.   I will say that you have not gotten very good answers from your
doctor.  I would want a reason for pain and this has gone on wayyy to long.
If you have pinched nerves for a long period of time,  damage to the nerve
bundle,,, damage to muscles and tendons involved,,,,, my mother put up with
pain like yours for 15 years and then had it operated on with great success
in her last 15 years of life.
I had lower back trouble for two years.  Stretching exercises before I
got out of bed each morning made my problem go away but,,,, but it was not
serious and yours might be....   Get good answers.

I've been to a lot of doctors over the years and finally gave
up on general practitioners and four years ago went to
University Medical Center thinking I would tell them
I'm in so much pain I think I have cancer I Want Test and I
expected to get test, find out what is causing this pain and
find a way to make it stop but that turned out to be a pipe
dream. No matter how many times I begged for test they
told me they don't think I need test their trying to save me
money and I would always reply
"Money Wont Do Me any good if I'm dead I Want Test".
I feel like I've been discriminated against because I don't have
insurance. I had a lot more money four years ago and tried to
get them to understand I was willing to spend whatever it took
to find what is causing this pain and make it stop. I told the
Doctors there I have to find out what is making this pain and
they just looked at me with a blank look on their face and asked
WHY??? and I told them
"If I Have Cancer I want to find out while I'm Still Alive".

I asked those doctors "Can't You Do Some Test, Any Kind
Of Test???".

Well it turns out that they might have known more than I
thought they did because when I started passing blood last
September I had been feeling like I was going to die for at
least six months and had been getting my life in order to die.
They told me to get to the hospital quick.I got a CT Scan
and they thought I had Colon Cancer and they acted like they
were scared because they wouldn't test me until I started
bleeding and they told me about financial assistance that isn't
generally known about and they scheduled a Colonoscopy
but it didn't show anything so finally I got an MRI and it did
show some regenerative disk and they are referring me to a
surgeon but I don't know if I want surgery but all those times
they told me
"OH NO It's not Cancer, You're To Young for Cancer" They
were right. They told me
"Now If You Were In Your Late Fifties Or Sixties Then It
Might Be Cancer, But No Your To Young For Cancer".

They diagnosed Colitis last September and the antibiotics
made me feel alive again.

I was scared I was going to die and when the autopsy was done
the Coroner would say "It's No Wonder This Man Died He's
Full Of Cancer". They wouldn't do test to find out what is
causing the pain but they tell me without a doubt "It's Not Cancer".

For the last three years I've been keeping a journal of everything
I do to chronicle the pain and how it affects my life so that my
family can sue after I die of cancer.

Over the years I've gone to Acupuncturist, Massage Therapy,
tried Alcohol therapy(drinking booze to try and make the pain
go away), Exercise and all sorts of things.

Some things helped for a while and some things didn't.

Now the latest thing that seems to help is salt water. I mix salt
with soft drinks to make it taste better.

This morning I was feeling better but now I'm in severe pain
again. The pain makes my mind go blank and conversations are
difficult but I can focus my attention better when I write because
I can see what I've written.

I've thought about finding some heroin somewhere but with my
luck I'd get arrested and be thrown in jail. I wonder how many
drug addicts are trying to self medicate and have been taking drugs
for so many years they can't remember why they started and they
can't quit long enough to figure out how they feel.

If I'm alive in a year I'll be surprised but I've been saying that for
quite a few years.

Thanks

My father had that.   Please get that fully treated.  It can cause a lot of
problems.  Good luck.

Hi-- reference your colitis---Before anyone laughs at this, read the whole
thing----there are solid scientific tests and backing, plus official
organizations and support groups on this

Electrolytes make a whole lot of sense to me, and I can back up exactly why
it is so, for me, and many many ostomates or colitis people.
I had ulcerative colitis for many years, and finally had to have my entire
colon removed.
I am much better now, much.
After the surgery, the surgeon came to my room and asked how  felt.
I said, I felt horrible, 120 years old, no energy to even move, and I felt
just terrible.
The surgeon said "GREAT!"
He said, "Because I want you to always remember how you feel right now, so
you can avoid it".
"Here's how"
"A colon does only a few things"
"The big, big words here are Recycles and for Re-Use"
"A colon absorbs water from the watery output of your small intestines and
recycles it, that's why stool is usually firm"
"A colon absorbs electrolytes and recycles them into your body for re-use,
your nervous system depends on this"
"A person without a colon, or a non-functioning colon can lose from 1/2
teaspoon to 1/2 tablespoon of salt a day per laboratory tests analyzing
their stool. A regular person has almost no salt loss in their stool, their
salt loss is from sweat"
"That amount of salt/electrolyte loss per day is very dangerous".
"Advice---never pass a water fountain without taking a sip"
"Advice--salt your foods, you loose salt every day, and 4 to 8 hours without
some salt will put you in the hospital ER"
"You will feel terrible all over and very old if you don't do this, plus it
is dangerous"

Yep, I have ended up in the ER with dehydration and/or salt loss, getting
IV's of electrolyte solutions.

Also, I am in an Ostomy association, a chapter group of about 200 of us, and
this is common knowledge.

By the way, where a colonoscopy is placed makes a whole lot of difference in
the output.
If in the left side descending colon, the stool will be fairly firm. Most
water  and salts re-absorbed.
If on the horizontal transverse colon, left side, more watery output. Some
water and salts not absorbed (shorter colon)
If on the horizontal transverse colon, right side, even more watery output.
Not much water, or salts absorbed (even shorter colon)
If at the start of the Ascending colon, right, by appendix, then very watery
output. No water or salts absorbed (no colon at all)

I am the last category, called an illeostomy. We were taught what I wrote
above about dehydration and salts, very very important. Until I really
learned this, I was in the ER more than a few times. So exhausted that I
thought I would die.

I don't have all the references to back this up anymore, I was an internet
webmaster (ostomies) since about 1996, then passed it on to younger people.

BTW, if the ileum, which is the last 6  to 12 inches of the small intestines
is removed, or is not functioning properly, the B-12 monthly  shots are
mandatory. The ileum is the part of the small intestines that has the job of
absorbing B-12. B-12 pills are useless, they can't be absorbed if the last 6
to 12 inches is not functioning properly, or is removed.
Without B-12, nerves misfunction, also.

Oddly, after an illeostomy, cholesterol goes way down---fat is absorbed on
the colon too, so they taught me to add a bit of fat to my diet. Our bodies
do need some of it.

Wish I still had all my references on lab tests on ostomies, but just hope
you check out what I am saying, for your own trust in this.

Check out     uoa.org    (United Ostomy Association)

They have most of this, if you search, plus they have a message group.

I hope this steers you down a path that will really help you.
Ostomates? There are 500,000 of us in the US, and 50,000 more each year,
approx.
You never hear of us, because in the US, anything about "stool" seems to be
a forbidden subject.
Ostomates?  Sammy Davis Jr, Murder She Wrote woman, the grandmother on
Golden Girls, Fred Astaire, The Pope, temporary after being shot, Geo Bush's
son, no not Jeb, another son, he admits it but doesn't want to be a poster
boy evidently, Control tower person at O'Hare Field (I've talked with that
person in the hospital), a NFL Quarterback, my sister, me, and on and on and
on. All functioning very well----(now)

I hope it helps you.
You bet salt and water and B-12 are important.
My colon got so diseased and non-functional that it had to be removed to
save my life, if yours is sick, this may help you, because your body depends
on what it can, or cannot, do.

But, an appropriate caution, have a good gastroenterologist check you out.
Don't do this on just my words.

Best---
Ron,    slow, 1 fingered typist----this took over an hour--but people are
worth it

>A regular person has almost no salt loss in their stool, their

For at least ten years whenever I do any type of physical activity
I sweat so much I think I'm going to drown. My stool is usually
so dry I've thought I would need surgery to get it out even with
laxative and when it's not dry like that it's almost all water.
Thank you for the web site links I will study them extensively.

Somewhere years ago I read an article about Cholera epidemic in
United States during 19th century where people were kept alive
by drinking sterilized water with cup of salt & cup of sugar. Salt
to retain water and sugar as nutrition. I've thought about
that occasionally over the years about how a simple solution can
keep people alive long enough to get better and today when I thought
about it I looked in encyclopedia it told about electrolytes being
depleted then searched electrolytes and found it interesting that
it was toward the end of 19th century they were beginning
to be understood.

The Earth is a wonderful place full of wonderful people.
Thank You All
