Oxidative stress status in an institutionalised elderly group after the intake
of a phenolic-rich dessert.

Food Technology, University of Granada, Campus de Cartuja, 18071 Granada,
Spain.

The elderly population undergoes a series of physiological and sociological
changes common to old age with a high probability of suffering degenerative
illness and malnutrition. A dessert rich in phenolic compounds has been
designed by using concentrated juices of grape, cherry, blackberry,
blackcurrant and raspberry with the aim of it being used as a complementary
food in adulthood. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the
intake of this dessert (a jar of 200 g daily for a period of 2 weeks), with an
antioxidant activity equivalent to ten servings of fruits and vegetables, on
several markers of oxidative and antioxidant status in DNA and plasma in a
group of elderly individuals. Non-smoking institutionalised elderly subjects
were recruited from a pool of volunteers in an old-age home in Murcia (Spain).
Twenty-two subjects (six men and sixteen women) participated in the study. The
study was designed as a randomised intervention trial with a period of 2 weeks.
At days 1 and 15, blood samples were collected to analyse total antioxidant
capacity, biochemical parameters, antioxidant vitamins, LDL peroxidation, and
DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The conclusion of the present study
is that a 2-week intervention with our dessert enriched with natural polyphenol
compounds in elderly individuals does not give enough time to find changes in
the antioxidant and oxidative status. Also, the view that the marked
antioxidant ability of polyphenols in vitro does not translate to analogous
effects in vivo was confirmed. Moreover, a highly oxidative stress status
during ageing was confirmed, together with the need to perform follow-up
nutritional studies to improve this situation.

Doe,,,,,    ya see the name of this newsgroup?  I could not find the word
arthritis in your post.  I know it hard for you to sort out the world around
you.   This is a newsgroup about health as it pertains to Arthritis.   As
your mind struggles to tie all things into too much or not enough iron,,,,,
You can be reported to your ISP for posting about things that have nothing
to do with arthritis.   This is a warning and I know that you can post just
like everyone else and AOL does support what I have said and has taken steps
in the past to support the charter of this newsgroup.

You .. know dick ABOUT arthritis .. as evidenced by this post ..

You firstly speak of how you USE vitamin E to combat .. oxidative stress .. and
NOW .. when it .. 'suits your liking' .. you selectively .. FORGET .. that you
are FULLY AWARE of the implications of oxidative stress in those with ..
arthritis ..

So .. THAT makes you a pussy ..

What did I call you before .. ?

A .. pussy .. ?

I have great insight .. don't .. I .. harv ..

you post as factual information or the answers to people problems.
Iron,,,,,  you are a real live joke.   If you were not so boring,,, you

and then started to foam at the mouth.   You are going to have a stroke one
of these days while my only problem is that I have too much iron which makes
me kind of heavy I guess.    Nuffff said troll.   See if you can dig up some
10 year old iron studies to worry over if they have something to do with
arthritis in your mind.

I have too little iron. So do you know what the outcome could be, if a person
is too low in iron for a long period of time. Say like 10 years?

Hhhhm,   Doe will probably ask you for your hand in marriage because it is a
dream of his for us all to end up like you.     Double hhhhm,,, I think I
would give up the doctor that let me go 10 years of low iron.

I was just studying it is all. It was like a coincidence when I seen the thread
on iron. Something else on another newsgroup caught my attention to look more
into low iron levels.

I was anemic as a teenager. I did take iron supplements at that time. I took
them into my mid twenties. I was diagnosed anemic back then. Life got busy, I
didn't go to doctors like I should've. I didn't take the iron supplements like
I should've. I still have a problem when its my menstrual cycle time of month
with iron being low. Like a pale, sickly look. My lips and gums are a light
color too, all the time. That is another symptom of low iron.

I did not realize either that low iron.. that is not taken care of.. can cause
more serious problems.

Thats why I asked. Asking my doc to run blood tests. What sort of tests can be
done to see if the iron is not being absorbed right?

OK, thank you.
I am taking a multi-vitamin right now. Mainly because I am doing a low carb
diet. Taking charge of my health. Not wallowing around and feeling sorry for
myself anymore. I am taking the brand name..One a day-carbsmart. Seen some
improvements while taking it. Like less leg cramps.

Could be why I have Fibromyalgai? Chronic illness? The low iron.
