I have a question or two, I was on Vioxx, excellent for the pain, but likely to kill you, Celebrex, not as good as relieving the pain, but off the market, Bextra didn't work at all for me. So now according to my physician, I have two choices, Naxopren, 500mgs twice a day, or Ibuprofen, 800 mgs 3 times a day, I found out that Ibuprofen helps me more, with only two per day... But my question is which one of the two is safer, if taking for a long time, I have severe osteoarthritis in both hips. Thank you. Hi Kiki, Even those to can cause problems. I found that Naxopren works best for me with any kind of pain. It can eat holes in your insides for some people but not for me. My family doctor had me on 3 500mg prescription naprosyn for 6 years before he threw up his hands and sent me to a Rheumatologist with pain in my shoulders and feet, knees,,, ect. That was the best thing he could of done. I started treatment for RA on the first visit which was gold shots back then. Please do not drink alcohol with either one. Good luck with it and I hope you have seen an RD. Harv Thank you Harv, I have switched back to Ibuprofen, Naproxen was really hurting my stomach. No I have not see a RA yet, just my regular Doc. My RD put me on Arthrotec 75, 75 mg twice a day, but she also said to continue with my Nexium and Gaviscon. I feel that Celebrex gave me a couple of beginning ulcers as I had no problems on Bextra. It worked, but not as well as the Arthrotec 75 does. Celebrex was a bust as far as I was concerned, though it does work well for some people. Naproxen gave me an ulcer in 13 days. Whoopee. Ibuprofen didn't help the ulcer but I was able to get along with the help of Tagamet and Zantac. Gallows Humor: I played in seniors tennis tournaments before my arthritic hips got too bad. We used to call the tournaments "The Ibuprofen Open" because so many of us were using it. I was able to use Arthrotec 75 for several years, despite the ulcer. Arthrotec contains diclofenac which is a potent NSAID. It also contained a second ingredient which increases mucus production in the stomach. Most Cox 1 inhibitors such as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc, cause damage to the stomach because they inhibit the production of stomach mucus. The two ingredients in Arthrotec sorta balance each other as far as stomach mucus is concerned. Arthrotec is especially noteworthy because diclofenac is one of the few NSAID which does not neutralize the anti-platelet agglomeration effect of daily aspirin. Ibuprofen is noted for its ability to neutralize the anti-platelet effect (i.e. the anti-heart attack effect) unless you take the aspirin quite a while before the ibuprofen. Since the aspirin is thought most useful if taken just before bed, the timing issues can get difficult. I now take Celebrex after a disastrous month when the ulcer started to bleed. AFAIK, Celebrex is still on the market, I got a 3-month supply at the beginning of August. Regards Old Al
