Nann Bell - 27 Jan 2006 04:00 GMT saw my surgeon today. they removed the bandages and first splint, the incision looked good and the stitches came out. because of what he found during surgery, i.e. the bone spur and the degree of joint erosion, he wants to keep the thumb immobilized for another 3 weeks for optimal results. i'd wondered if the post-op course would be affected by what he'd found so i wasn't too surprised when he said he wanted 3 weeks in a cast before i move to splint only.
naturally, i wanted an orange and blue cast for the Florida Gators, but it's too small of a cast to do 2 colors well and they didn't really have the right blue anyway. settled for a medium green - cheery w/o being obnoxious. at least the cast is less bulky than the post-op bandaging/splint was and i can use my fingers a bit more. down side is that my thumb is still in an extended position ALL the time as he says i'll have the best ROM down the line if it's cast in this position. makes the right hand a real devil to get through the cuffs of winter coats and jackets though! and winter's supposed to be re-appearing here next week...........
cast comes off the afternoon of Valentine's Day. see my RD and have blood drawn next week with my pretty green cast on ;-)

d'huit - 27 Jan 2006 05:05 GMT awwww, shucks! you, too? i had to open the seam, from the cuff up, of a sweatshirt, just so i could wear something with long sleeves around the house when i was in that fixator. i'm glad i did that and can wear it with this cast now. (my cast is powder blue.LOL) a thin nylon sock over it, helps it slip through coat sleeves, so the thumb doesn't hook and tear out the sleeve-lining seams of my wool coats. (had to get one of those coats repaired, before i wised up.) gathered/elastic cuffs of parka jackets just won't work with my cast, cuz of thumb position--bet that's a prblem for you, too. and it stretches the heck out of sweaters. don't know about you, but keeping the thumb dry is not easy, though it dries very quickly by the woodstove or with my hair drier. at least this casting material doesn't disintergrate when it does accidentally get wet. the old plaster casts were a mess.
glad you're doing ok, sweetie. heal well, my friend.

Nann Bell - 28 Jan 2006 12:29 GMT well, i've been wearing splints so much, i have several shirts & sweaters that will fit over them. it was tough finding stuff to go over all the bandaging though! luckily i wasn't active enough to get stuff dirty fast. as for jackets, getting them off is the real problem! at dr. W's this week i was sharing a smile with another patient over my efforts to get my jacket on and told her it's really funny to watch me trying to get out of it! lol, it's a matter of getting the angle just right, though the sleeve of my down jacket usually ends up inside out.........
on the other hand, i'm off the hook for washing dishes for 3 more weeks and mike's agreed to do some vacuuming and sweeping next week. the wall i painted with him out of the house last night may cost me some leverage on that last, but i swear the paintbrush is easier to handle left-handed/one-handed than the vacuum or broom. really! lol

So glad to hear that your surgery went well and that you are doing so well after it all. Glad your doctor is being cautious with it, but I'm sure you're probably getting a bit tired of the bandaging and such. Hope your next visit will have you out of all of the bandaging and beginning your rehab of that hand!!!
Be kind to yourself and give Mike a hug for me!!!

Squirrely - 01 Feb 2006 00:52 GMT Glad the stitches came out. I hope the three weeks go quickly for you that you have to keep the thumb immobilized.
Should have gotten a red cast that way it would have been good for Valentine's Day unveiling. LOL ;-)
Between you and Kate, you will look like you are giving us double thumbs up. Sorry couldn't resist.

LOL ;-) heh, actually part of my decision to get green involved it currently being Epiphany in the liturgical church season. considered purple, but the cast will be gone before Lent and i didn't want to confuse anyone! (and green is nice in our REALLY dreary winter that refuses to settle into a true winter - though we're FINALLY supposed to get an arctic cold front next week!)

Squirrely - 02 Feb 2006 20:38 GMT green is ok, purple is ok too, I like purple.
Guess you heard we are going to have another 6 weeks of winter.
Oh, I hope the arctic cold front doesn't treat you too badly.
Stay warm.

Squirrely - 03 Feb 2006 15:54 GMT Yeah I saw somewhere back there, the temps were actually higher yesterday than normal. We are having 60's out here.
