health insurance question

I just found this group, and I hope it is okay to ask this question.

My husband has ankylosing spondelitis (AS).  He is an alternative
healthcare practitioner, and pretty much anti-doctor (for him, the
medical establishment has not been helpful, and his body is very
intolerant of most meds, including ibuprofen).  He is also
self-employed, and does not have health insurance.

I am also self-employed, but I am self-insured for health insurance.
While I am looking for a job, I still want to figure out how to get him
covered in the meantime, at least so we are protected with catastrophic
care.

So, I've been wondering, does anyone have any suggestions?  What do you
do?

Hi Rj,
I would check with your state and see if any programs are available to
help you.
AS usually requires some heavy duty meds and this site has some of the
major med manufacturers and how to get a hold of them.

Also, the low or no starch diet seems to have helped many with AS. It
is based on the theory that the AS gene (HLAb27) is stimulated by a
bacteria that may have escaped the intestines. This bacteria feeds on
starch.Without the starch to feed on the bacteria will wane and
symptoms will diminish. This is partially a theory and I am just
passing this on. You can learn more about it at kickas.org.
Good luck to you guys,
Char

Hi -- Thank you for the info.

At this point, I am really only looking for info on health
insurance/catastrophic care, and what people may have done... He has
his treatment plan.  He does not use pharmaceuticals or doctors (well,
except for D.O.'s) to treat his AS, as he has had many a bad
experience.  He uses expert homeopathy, accupuncture, osteopathy,
chinese medicine to help control/manage his AS -- this is his best
method, after almost 30 years (he is 44 now, first symptoms at 16 and
diagnosis at 21).  His body is very sensitive to drugs, and he has had
many bad experiences -- in fact, it's only in the worst flare up that I
can get him to take even an Aleve, which can take the edge off for him.
And, of course, as an alternative healer, he's going to look at
alternatives first, anyway.

My concern is of course coverage for catastrophic care -- like, what if
he needs an emergency appendectomy (which costs $30K), or breaks bones,
or something.

Are there any providers in California that you know of that will cover
someone with AS as a pre-existing condition?

Thanks again,
RJ

You may try looking into several professional organizations or groups to
see if they offer any type of insurance for people who run/own their own
businesses or who are in the naturopathic fields.   You could also check
with your home insurance agent to see if they offer any types of basic
catastrophic insurance options, although they more than likely will be
quite costly.   Another option, depending on your income levels is to
see if you qualify for any type of assistance through medicaid, etc.

Good luck!

if you want just catastrophic coverage, a good way to start is just to call
the independent insurance agents in your area, asking what they have.

there are also websites that let you plug in info and get possible insurance
companies and plans, though i'd racommend further checking out any company
you haven't heard of before going with them.
http://www.healthinsurancefinders.com/ is one such site, though i have no
idea of how good it is.

http://www.ahrq.gov/consumer/insuranc.htm is an info page from the government
which may or may not be helpful for you.
