Hello: I'm a hemophiliac with Hep C. I have had two herniated discs in
my lower back for years..This last year the pain frequency and
intensity started to get worse. Pain in my legs, buttocks, and even
down to my feet were happening with increasing regularity.

I had a CT-Scan and it showed spinal stenosis. The doctor said no
orthopedic surgeon would consider me a good candidate for surgery due
to my other conditions. He literally said, "you're between a rock and a
hard place".

I also have stomach problems due to my liver chirossis.

So.........

What pain relief medication would recommend? I have no Idea what is out
there for back pain such as I have.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Hi Paul,,,,,   In other words the doctor was saying you have let this go on
wayyyy to long.   To the point of not being able to operate.   That is just
his opinion and you should get another.
This is not a new type of situation.  We have people that post here
all the time that have endured their problem to the point of,,,, its too
late.   I hope that others can talk to you about which pain medicine to
take.   I have no personal experience with that.

I have gotten shots in the 'disc area' for back/sacroiliac pain. It has
helped to where I can walk and even stand longer than before and not in
horrid pain from it. (Bending over is still  no-no.) Pain is always there
but is much more tolerable. I go to a Pain Management Dr for these shots. He
does it under very mild sedation so I don't move and uses an x-ray machine
to guide him. also had it done between the 2 herniated neck discs. First
shot helped and 2nd one didn't up there. I can get this type of shot 4 times
a year and get 'trigger point injection's every week if needed. I'm sure one
of the folks here know what the name of these injections are, I'm sorry I
don't remember the names right off hand. I do know both have steroid
medicine in them and the trigger point ones have Lidocaine besides the small
amount of cortesteroid. I also have Lidocaine patches that I put on when the
pain is non-stop......seems that is dependent on weather and if I have to
remain seated for any length of time.

I've just read on another forum(hep-c) that Methadone can be a good
painkiller.

Thanks for your replies.

i wasn't certain if you were asking about otc or prescriptive painkillers.
since methadone is prescriptive, you must meant prescriptive.   there are
many other drugs that will help you.  with your hemophilia, i'd just be
careful to ask if the one being prescribed has blood thinning properties.
also with your hemophilia, you are probably needing non-invasive treatments.
icing helps with my multiple disc issues.  i use a large, 10x15 inch,
all-temp thermal pack, inserted into a flannel pillow case.

while epidurals also helped me, i wonder if the insertion of a large needle
might be a problem with your bleeding issues.  but don is correct, an
orthopaedic surgeon does mor than operate.

Paul the shots mentioned by one of  the other posters are epidural;
steroid injections given in three rounds at a time.
Orthopedic surgeons are not there just to do surgery. They are also
there to help you find ways to relieve your pain.
I can not figure why your Doctor feels a trip to an orthopedic surgeon
is not necessary.  I have spinal stenosis and
scoliosi, RA, Fibromyalgia and Osteopenia and  it is my Orthopedic
Surgeon that makes certain I get the proper
care for my neck/shoulder and back pains.  Your Doctor could have
referred you to a Pain Clinic.
You may also benefit from certain types of exercise which an Orthopedic
surgeon could direct you with a PT clinic.
