Yes it is.  We were caught unknowing this last year and had to pay both
fed and state tax.  We opted for voluntary tax deductions and hope this
year will be ok.

Hmmm, is SSDI taxable as well?

Hmmm, then why don't they ask you if you want money taken out?  If I
have to pay, I'll scream! But I do have a ton of deductions, so
hopefully  I'll be OK. Who do you contact to have deductions taken out?
Thankfully we don't have state tax in Washington :)

If you go to www.ssa.gov and go into the disability section there is a
question and answers about this.
If your total taxable income including SSDI is between $25000 and $34000
you may be taxed on 50% of your SSDI.  There are other factors to
consider also.

Oh, no way :)  My gross was only $21,000 this year including my SSDI.
Once I take all my medical deductions, and my standard deduction and all
that, I should be OK then :)  I'll check out the link. Thanks, Ann :)

That's taxing us on a tax we already paid! Ain't it great?

Not really.  We only paid half of the tax.  So taxing half for those with
other income isn't much of a reach.  Taxing 85% for those with a lot of
other income is justified in that most who live to collect Social Security
will collect far more than was paid in to their account.

SSDI is taxed in the same way that regular social security is taxed.  Not
ordinarily a problem if you and any spouse are retired any was.

It is only taxed if you have other income over certain levels.

Where you have a married couple and one has decent earnins and the other is
on social security. you will likely pay tax on 85%  or your social security.

If you received social security payment for prior years you have a choice in
how it is taxed.  You can just follow the rules as though it was all for
this year, or you can recalculate how much of it would have been taxable in
the years it was paid for.  A little difficult, but there are worksheets on
the IRS site, or you can get some help.
