di, i just don't understand this. i've read about you folding peops
here on asa for years, but try as i might, i don't understand what
protein folding is. can someone explain it in 25 words or less on, say,
a fifth grade level?

Take a string of pop beads (DNA) of 4 different colors & twist it so
every bead is touching at least 2 other beads.
We'll call that configuration 'Normal' now if something messes up
that configuration we have 'not Normal' & possibly disease.
What the Folding @ home program is doing is figuring out all the
possible ways that string can twist or fold & what the result of that
different fold can do to our health.
This is how the new biologic medicines are being developed. Stanford
shares the result of our calculations with the drug companies & they
figure out how to use that information to create a new drug.
Their explanation is at,

Just look at the pictures if the idea is to confusing.

alex, thank you. this is just amazing and fantabulous. plus, incredible
that just regular people can contribute to science in this way.

Thanks, Alex. You described it much more succinctly than I ever could.
Fact is, I couldn't. <g>
