I get emails with attachments, some are Power Point and some are not, that
when I try to open them I am asked if I want to open them or not.  I click
on yes and then I got a notice that says. "This file does not have a program
associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the
Folder Options control panel."
I have Windows XL and have "Power Point viewer 2003."

My DIL says she has only ever seen Power Point listed on the programs
without "Viewer" on it.  Does that make any difference on Power Point?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

PowerPoint Viewer is a program designed to do exactly what it says, let
you view PP presentations without being able to edit them in any way. I
think it's free, but PowerPoint, as part of Microsoft Office, can be
rather expensive (if you don't qualify for the educational price).

I'm not much of an expert, but I'll try. Open any explorer window (eg-My
Documents) and click View>Folder Options and File Type.  In the window
which opens all your file types will be listed, scroll down to pps. or
ppt. and if they are not associated with PowerPoint viewer you can click
change and chose PP from the list.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Cooly,  I'll try that and see what happens.

There's a new virus going around that looks like a powerpoint to people
that haven't altered their default windows settings to show file
extensions for known file types. Are you SURE what you're opening is
actually a powerpoint file, and not this virus?

Ari, I have gotten these from my cousins and also some that are not Power
Point.  The ones I've tried to open I am pretty sure are really Power Point.

The only virus my wife ever got on her computer was from her sister.
family-photo.jpg which was, in reality, family-photo.jpg.vbs. Please
confirm the file type, not just the extension that you see, if you have
extensions for known file types turned off as I described previously.

If microsoft's software won't open them, OpenOffice.org will, assuming
they really are powerpoint files.
