just need to . . . not vent, really. just share my worry with people
who understand. you may remember nearly a year ago when my boyfriend
and now housemate, john, got very sick and it turned out to be crohns
colitis. he was put on prednisone in february. he got off pred in the
summer, immediately flared, and was put back on 40 mg. he finally got
off that a month ago and has been gradually going downhill, tho with a
lot of denial and looking for other causes ("it must be something i
ate") while i sit by knowing he's sinking into another flare (fatigue,
aching, cramping), but have to be careful what i say because he just
wasn't ready to own up to it. the bleeding started again last night, so
he spoke with his doc this morning and he's back on pred again. after
this year of pred, he has osteoporosis and i don't want to think about
what his other organs are suffering. in crohns, there are some "dmard"
equivalents, although i don't think they call them dmards. one is 6 MP,
which sounds a bit like mtx in its action and side effects. he was on
it years ago and hates it. was trying to avoid it. another is remicade,
my own beloved, if slowly failing, drug. he adamantly refuses to go on
it because of the immunosuppresant nature and the cost, which he fears
will make it harder for him to get insurance in the future. (an
unfortunate truism). but he needs something other than pred (and he
also takes a mild maintenance drug called asecol (sp?)), and i'm hoping
when he sees his doc, the doc will convince him it's time to get
serious.
i do research for him and he says, while he appreciates it, he really
just needs me to let him vent and not try to tell him what he should
do. <g> does this sound familiar? i surely understand how he feels, so
i am now shutting up and just trying to be here for him.
well, i guess this was a vent after all. thanks for listening.

Wish things were better for him (and thereby, you).
Is he a member of the CCA or other support network? Might that help to help
him feel less alone and out of control with all this?

thanks adelle. lol. i think i'm the one who feels alone with it. he's
not a support group kinda guy. so i've been hanging out at
alt.crohns-colitis, or whatever it's called.

Men!!!!!!!
(ok. Got it out of my system, now)
Bitch, moan, etc. but be proactive....?
(well maybe not)
It's so hard to be a supportive partner when they won't do what they need
to. Doug Doug is sick or hurt. he wants to be treated like he should be
wrapped in cotton and all I really want to do is smack him upside the head.
(hope this brought a couple of chuckles)

Oh, shoot, I'm really sorry to hear this!!!
Prayers that the doctors can get him feeling better again quickly and
that they can come up with a routine that will give him much longer
periods between flares.
Also praying for you, Diane, as I know how hard it can be to just stand
by quietly and not say anything, while still being comforting!!!
Hope you both can still enjoy a nice holiday time together!!!
Hugs!

is he related to Mike? Mike had a stomach bug this week and kept me up all
one night moaning, no, make that HOWLING, from the living room. And why did I
have to do more for him in that two days than he did for me during that 4
week bug?
sigh....................

Hi Diane,
I feel for you and him! I sometimes think the caregiver has the most
frustrating job in this "position". Hoping the doctor might talk him into
remicade. Is he taking an osteo drug??
Thinking of both of you,

Oh Diane,
I know this has to be hard on the both of you. Sending lots of hugs,
prayers, and good thoughts to the both of you.
Just got your card today with letter. Loved the pics in there.
Your place just sounds so wonderful. I am so happy for you.
I feel for John, and all others too for that matter, that have to do the
pred trip and then end up with osteo from it. I hope he is able to find
something that will work and help keep it under control that is not so
harmful.

Yikes...I'm sorry to hear that John is having problems again/still. Has he
tried Azulfadine (sulfasalazine)? It's a frontline drug for many with
colitis/crohns disease. I have a friend who is taking it currently. It's
inexpensive compared to Remicade, etc., but can be very effective.
Best wishes,
Kelly C.

kelly c, i didn't know azulfadine was used for crohns. i'll ask him
about it, tho he may be past the frontline drug stage. and kelly not-c,
he is on fosamax and has been for years. lost bone even taking it this
year. :-(

((((((((((Diane & John))))))))) such a difficult situation for both of you.
sigh, the insurance system in this country really isn't helping any either
with both of you self-employed. Praying and crossing my fingers.

Diane,
Yes, sulfasalazine is used for ulcerative colitis.
That being said, prayers are on the way for you both. ((Diane and
John))
