Never given blood plasma or the sort before.  Anyone else? Do you get
sick from it? Any risks?  I really don't feel up to a long search so I
appologize for taking the lazy way of asking you all.  Back on the same
floor, different room.  This one's a bit smaller which is a good thing
because I'm not getting around too well.  At first I thought it was
jjust my hip and one shoulder but now I'm beginning to wonder if it's
not a side effect from the new IV abx they have me on. IT talks about a
muscle condition that is worrisome enough tha the doctors monitor CPK
and C-reactive protien when you are on it.  I think that might be what
it is.  I'm  hurting so bad and can no longer walk without my walker.
That's not me. I'm still waiting for my blood and such.  Couldn't sleep
last night the pain was so severe so I'm gonna try and get some sleep
now.

I hope everyone is preparing for a wonderful Christmas!  My darling
husband has been wonderful at taking a list and checking it twice. He's
done very well at finishing my shopping for me.

Cyberhugs....DianeW

Hope the plasma makes you feel better.  Not fun getting run through the mill
like this.

Just consider this one of many hugs from us all next time you get to the
computer.

haven't gotten plasma myself, but have seen gallons of it given over years of
working in hospitals.   It's great for improving your clotting factors, so
it's one of the first line treatments for that low PT of yours.  Risks that I
know of are quite small - of course there's always a chance of a reaction to
anything, but that is very rare with plasma.  Guidelines for administering
blood products are so strict now that three separate folks would have to make
serious and major mistakes to give you the wrong type, so you are reasonably
safe there.  They'll also monitor you for any reactions and can stop it
immediately if anything untoward happens.  It should fix up that PT pronto
for you.  Do they know why it dropped like that though?

Your antibiotic sounds like a nasty one, though I guess it's good that they
know to monitor for severe muscle reactions. Maybe they can give you some
better pain medicine so you can sleep at night?  How much longer do they plan
to have you on this stuff?

thank goodness for your husband, at least you'll have some Christmas.

Nann - My PT was too high actually. At least that's how I understand
it. Normal for me should be 2-3 and I was almost 7.9.  Why?  Probably a
combination of trying so long and aggressively to get it up there and
the abx I am taking and also diflucan is notorious for sending it up.
That's what started this to begin with.  About 4 week ago I was put on
Diflucan for an all over yeast skin rash, 100 mg a day for 10 days. It
was during that time the PT went up to 4.8 and coumadin was
discontinued.  Then when I had the cellulitis, it stayed low for so
long that the dr added lovonyx to thin things out till the coumadin
kicked in. That's when I had the hemotoma (bleed) in my knee.  Then
they put me on all the abx which led to more yeast and more diflucan.
Only this time it was 200 mg for 10 days.....you get the picture!  Now
my PT goes up to 7.9! So they gave me the blood plasma to normalize the
PT/INR and tomorrow I start coumadin again and get tested on Monday.

The GP just left. He said my hemoglobin dropped again last night. I
guess plasma and hemoglobin don't effect each other?? Anyway, if my
next PT and hemoglobin are ok, I get discharged. If not, new plan.
He's not convinced that the IV deptomicin is causing the muscle pain
and spasms but is running a CPK test to see what's up. So pray for good
labs!

Guess who visited me last night at 1AM?  My son and two of his high
school buds home from college!  What a hoot!  They were down the street
at a concert and the boys home for Christmas wanted to come see me so
Nick brought them over. I was having a hard time staying awake having
not slept for two days from the muscle pain and was drifting off mid
sentence. Of course, they thought I was on drugs!  LOL  It was nice of
them to come. They called first and the nurse told them it was ok with
the hospital if it was ok with me. I've sure missed having all the kids
over now that they are gone to college. It was a nice change of pace to
see them.  They are very disappointed that I can't have my traditional
Christmas Eve party where I bake tons of cookies. Usually about 100
dozen all in all. Not only do they get to stuff themselves at the
party, but each would go home with a box of their favorites.  And in
the weeks preceeding they knew there would always be goodies in the
house and they could sneak a few here and there while I wasn't looking.
That's one of the things I've really missed about being in the
hospital  this year.  I told them they could still come over on
Christmas Eve if I'm home but they have to bring the goodies.  But no
one jumped at that idea.  I'm sure if I'm still here, tho' they might
be too!

Merry Christmas!!!

Cyberhugs, DianeW

Argh - I'm flipping around my PT and PTT info in my memory banks.  been away
from the stuff for too long, I guess. sigh.... just ignore me.

I think it's time for us to work on a body transplant for you, it's just
getting too complex and we want you feeling better!

That was so sweet of your son and his buds to stop by.  I think it's really
cool that your son's friends care so much about you, though it doesn't
surprise me somehow  ;)

I don't think I've had plasma, but my anemia was so bad when I was in the
hospital in June that they gave me two units of blood - one in the room and
one during my operation.  My latest blood tests show me still anemic so they
think there's a leak of some kind somewhere, but it must not be too serious
'cause no one's checking for origins.  They just keep saying, "We'll need to
watch that."  LOL They've been watching it for several years now.

Have a good holiday anyway, Sweetie.  Bob and I will keep you in our
prayers.

i don't know about plasma, diane, although when i used to get remicade
in the hospital, there were people receiving it there without incident.
i hope it helps.

your reaction to the abx does worry me, but i assume your docs are on
top of things. this has to be a hard holiday for you. your hubby sounds
like a keeper!
