Find a good Rheumatologist, he will confirm if you acutally have gout.
Psuedo gout, and anything else should be ruled out.
Just my 2 cents
Good luck.
Mrb,
You really do need to find a good rheumatologist to evaluate or
reevaluate your situation. You may have more going on with you than
you realize, and only a good rheumatoligist can help you sort this all
out.
It just so happens that on the discovery health channel the other night,
they had a show about mystery diagnoses, and one of the cases they
shared was of that of a young man in his mid 20's, who was in great
shape, not overweight in any way, was young, and his initial
presentation was that of a very red hot swollen knee. He then went on
to have many problems with pain, but now a whole lot of redness or
swelling. This went on for several years with many different trials of
meds and many differing diagnoses, all because he did not fit the
"typical" profile of someone with gout. It was actually a few years
later when he again developed a red hot swollen joint that an orthopedic
doctor at a local ER he went to drained the elbow and sent it off for
culture and such that it came back with a diagnosis of gout!
So, as you can see, you are not the only one who presents atypically and
who could probably get better treatment from a rheumatologist or from a
good doctor who will just listen and then be willing to take the time to
get to the bottom of it all for you!!!
Best wishes to you in getting what ever is going on under better
control!

Donna G,
Thank you for your reply - actually, I have great faith in my
rheumatologist due to his great success with a non-blood relative who
was crippled with gout. I'm going back to him - directly.
I assume draining an inflammed joint is done after shot of pain
killers. Just the thought of draining without pain killers makes me
wince.
Thanks

Which makes you normal in my world.... I can truthfully say that I never
enjoyed having a joint drained and steroid filled butttt it always helped.
The fluid does its own kind of damage and is why it is drained.
Good luck with it all,,,
