Well I guess you have correctly figured out that I am in the hospital.
I had just typed  three paragraph post telling you about everything
that has happened and it suddenly disappeared!  Very frustrating.  I'm
going to try and give you the readers digest version.

The doppler was negative for a DVT but the thought was that I had
cellulitis.  After seeing me in his office my GP convinced me to go to
the hospital when he compared caring for the cellulitis in my leg to
"waiting for the tsunami to come"  We negotiated - I'd only be here 48
hours (HA!) I get to do all my own meds including pain meds and he
would direct admit me to a private room.  I'm in the new MD Anderson
wing where all rooms are private and include a TV DVD/VCR player.  It
is like being in an upscale hotel. So I got to thinking last night that
they just might have internet acess here and they do -- on each floor
in the family room. Isn't this cool!

I'm on 3 abx - cipro which I was already on and IV Vancomyicin and IV
Cleocin.  My stomach was protesting with 25/7 nausea so I get a new IV
drug for that as well.  The abx are making my blood sugar go wacky so
I'm on an insulin sliding scale and for some reason my potasium is
staying low and they keep having to supplement that. Other than that,
I'm doing fine.  I requesting a pic line on friday as my veins are not
too cooperative and it's much easier with all the IV's and blood tests.

My experince in 2000 was so bad that I've begged off going to the
hospital ever since. They have really pulled it together here. Everyone
is wonderful to me. My only complaint is with the food -- isn't it
always?  LOL I'm in pretty good spirits and am glad I decided to come
to the hospital this timje. It was one nasty infection.

Well it all disappeared again!  At least this time I had it copied
first.  Geeze! I am thinking that Enbrel is going to have to go away --
too risky with all these infections I am getting. I'm going to post
this now and go back to my room.  Dinner should be there. Oh boy!  I'm
supposed to get to go home Mon or Tues but no one said anything today.
I'll stop in later.

Cyberhugs,  DianeW

diane! i for one am relieved to hear from you and you sound like you're
in good spirits given all you're going through. and your hospital
sounds luxurious! (except for the food). i'm glad they're getting the
cellulitis under control and hope you don't have to stay too much
longer. we're all thinking of you.

Those are my thoughts too.  It seems that good things are going to come from
this hospital stay.

It's good to hear from you. Folks were getting worried. At least the
hospital sounds like a comfortable place to be for you, even if the food is
substandard.:)

I hope you get fully well really soon and can find something other than
Enbrel that helps with the RA. It really doesn't sound like your best bet
right now.

Hi Diane,

If you have loads of blood tests, IV, etc. you may   want to consider a
port instead of a pic line. Because I  get so many blood tests and when
I have chemo they abandoned the pic line and put in a port. I have had
over 20 years of Prednisone and my veins just do not cooperate with a
reg. IV. I go a blood clot with the Pic line so they immediately put in
the port.  It is very easy to use and can remain place  for years.  It
must be flushed every 30 days with saline and heparin.

I have a port for my Chemo as well.  I requested that they put in a port and
I got my wish.  Definitely the way to go in my opinion...

Hi Yan,,,  Over the years, we have had a few people that needed a port but
it did not work for them.  Their veins and arteries were too far gone.   It
is one of the things inflam.arth. does to a person over the years.  It is
one of the best arguments for staying on a DMARD but we do not talk about it
much but it is what kills us.

I think you're right Diane.  You just get too many infections.  Please take
care of yourself and know you are in my prayers.

Sounds like you are getting proper treatment in fairly decent surroundings.
Hope all is well and you are able to continue treatment at home soon.

I think I've figured out hospital food.  A great many patients are not going
to be eating much no matter what you try to feed them.  Hospitals just kick
most everyone that isn't on IV feeding out pretty quickly.  Even those who
can eat aren't usually all that hungry or easy to please.  They just plain
don't feel good.  So all those trays come back half full no matter what.
That has to depress the kitchen staff after a few years.

Then there are patients like me who get kind of hooked on being in the
hospital.   I usually am not too eager to go home where I'll have to take
care of myself.  If I'm ill I kind of would just as soon stay longer that
they will let me.  So the boring food is one way to run me off.  The desire
for food finally outweighs the need for security.

Glad to hear they are successfully treating it, Diane.
When my dad would be in the hospital, Mom could always tell when he
was ready to come home, he would start to complain about the food!

Prayers continuing.

You are so right about the food. I get tired easily and about halfway
thru my meal, I just give up. Plus the doc put me on a cardio diet.
Need I say more!  LOL  Tonight was actually tasty but I still only ate
half of it. I'm starting to get the drift of ordering -- I just circle
everything I can on the menu that I like and that way if something
isn't good I can have something else. Plus I can save fruit and desert
for later before I go to sleep.  Thanks!  DianeW

Hi,

It's good that you are in good spirits.  I wish you a quick recovery so you
can go home and eat real food. *smile*
