if you need heat, use a rice sock. (take a cotton sock and add regular
uncooked rice. Tie to close. Heat 2 1/2 minutes in microwave. Will
stay warm about one hour.) Put it against the spot or stick the hand
in reverse so the whole hand gets the warmth.

Oh, the hands - mine have the worst concentration of arthritis in my entire
body - one can get knee replacements, hips, etc., etc., but nothing to be
done for these knobby fingers - that I can't understand.
I was using a parafin bath, but then found that if there is inflammation in
the joint, the heat just worsens everything - no solutions, it seems.
I am lucky, though - that I know as my OA doesn't stop me from enjoying my
life - I am just miffed that medicine doesn't consider the hands to be that
important.
I have used the bio freeze and it is helpful.

Hiker, my mother had the joints of the fingers where they join the palm of
the hand replaced. She had RA and had terrible pain in her hands.

The orthopaedic, specializing in hands gave me information that ONLY the
thumbs could be worked with -
I thank you for that information - maybe there is more information with
other doctors -

Hiker-
Which joints? MIP (main joints) PIP (middle) or DIP (tips)? Both hands?
What makes the doc think it is osteo and not rheumatoid? Rheumatoid is
symetrical (both hands) whereas osteo gets into specific joints--usually the
tips. I had all the MIP's replaced about 1975 and other work done on the
PIP's (synovectomies, etc.). I have RA. Jan O'
