Does anyone taking Humira have difficulty giving themselfs the shot?  I take
it once a week and I dread it ever time. I was told there is a chemical
preservative in it that makes it sting alot when injected.  How do you deal
with that?  Any tips or whatnot to lessen the pain of the injection

Brian,I have the same problem, only every other week.I just dread getting
them too,it feels like getting stung by a Bee.I called the company once
on it and they were really no help, all they said was to let the alchohol
dry before injecting,I've tried that and it doesn't makea difference. It
is preservative free,so must be some other ingredient.Sory I couldn't be
of help.Would be great if someone knew of a way to lessen it. Carol

I use Enbrel.
Try icing down the area first, even with an ice cube should do it.
With Enbrel, taking it out of the fridge and letting it sit for about
15-20 minutes also helps. I don't know if you can do that with Humira,
but you check with your doc or pharmacist.
I dread the Enbrel shot because it stings too, but it's nothing
compared to the joint pain.

Brian-
I am not on Humira but years ago I would get prednisone shots that stung
like a hornet.  Ahem,  I am a wee bit overweight--well, actually quite a
bit.  The longer needle was the answer.  Nurse said the med the was
intra-muscular and only stung when injected into adipose tissue.  Jan O'

I have found that by letting it sit out for 1/2 hour and then injecting it
very fast, it stings less. I used to inject slowly and the stinging would
just continue on and on. But pushing the plunger fast seems to "shoot" the
medicine deeper, maybe beyond the pain receptors. I don't know. I'm not
saying it doesn't sting at all. But this way, it seems only a second or two
and then it's gone.

sorry I couldn't help more.

BTW, I had this same problem with the pre-filled enbrel syringes but not
with the powdered form... go figure.

Brian, many years ago I broke my leg and crushed my ankle. I was in hospital
for 3 months, and for a lot of that time I was getting 6 hourly penicillin
injections, and they hurt like hell ! One night the nightshift nurse (I
should have married her !) was most suprised when I told her that I hated
having the injections because they hurt so much "Don't they slap the area
first ?" she said.

What she did, she wiped the area to be injected, and her fingers on her free
hand, and then just before she inserted the needle and injected, she gave
the injection site a good slap - just a sharp, quick slap - and then stuck
the needle in. I felt nothing, and have insisted on the same procedure since
then - whenever my kids needed vaccinations for instance.

It was some years later that I developed a theory why it works (not sure if
it's correct ;-). The slap "fires" the nerves in the area, and there is a
short time before they are "reset". This short "reset" window is when the
injection should be given.

Try it and let me know if it works for you (no patent fees apply !!!!)

regards
Rob
