Nann Bell - 30 Nov 2005 16:27 GMT (whine warning)
I've been dealing with a rebellious stomach for one day shy of 3 weeks now. Lots of gas and bloating, mostly stomach, but intestinal as well. Unfortunately, I stayed on my DMARDs for the first week because it kept behaving as if it were improving. I've learned not to trust that feeling, it rarely lasts more than 3/4 of a day.
I've also been having fever spikes, though low enough to be in the virus range. The weird thing is, the fever will come down on its own, if I can stand he aches for long enough, I'll feel better for much of the next day, then the cycle starts up again. Naturally, I have all the general feeling lousy and hurting all over that goes with viruses, but my joints haven't improved any - in fact ones that weren't hurting much have been screaming! I truly, truly am not having fun.
Called my doc Monday and of course they are really booked up this time of year. The nurse did manage to get me scheduled for Friday without having to make me an emergency, which I really don't think I am right now. Last night my fever spiked up the highest yet - 100.6 - then came back down to normal on its own over the next 2 hours. Feel better energy-wise this morning, but stomach definitely still not happy. I fear last night's spike was not the end of this.
I'm not accustomed to being this clueless about what's going on and it doesn't help any that the nurse was mystified when I told her how its all been behaving. I did start tracking my symptoms and temperature yesterday to show the doctor on Friday in case it helps any.
I really need to get over this. Mike's ordination, the final one to the priesthood, is 2 weeks from Saturday. I CANNOT be sick for that! Mike goes to the same PCP as I, so I plan to tell him that on Friday!

Lots of good vibes coming your way. --- Joan
Diane - 30 Nov 2005 20:21 GMT ugh, nann. i wish you didn't have to wait until friday to see the doc. it's so hard living with the unknown. you sound like me: "oh, it's getting better. i'll just wait a little longer before i make an appointment. . . " i have no idea what your symptoms may mean, but i hope the doc can get you fixed up good as new (well, as good as you can get) by the ordination.
hugs,

I also decided I don't want anything more chronic unless it can be completely & easily controlled!

Adelle - 01 Dec 2005 18:30 GMT Sorry you feel so lousy, Nann.
I was researching IBS the other day. Several sites said that fever is not associated from IBS. And also, that the presence of a fever is one way to differentiate IBS from Colitis. Not a happy thing to think about - sorry.
Hoping this is just viral and blows over soon.
Oh! have you had anything to eat/drink that may have included well water (or been in a river or something) in the weeks before this started. Parasites are so hard to find, even when you test for them. My friend's daughter had similar symptoms for a long time. Finally, a ped. GI suggested they try a course of antibiotics before they started invasive testing - and it went away from the abx. They are assuming it was giardia (spelling?), even though they had gone through stool testing (several times).

Not a happy thing to think about - sorry. well, as luck would have it, I don't have the classic colitis symptoms. Aside from gas, the intestines are working most normally. whew!

> Oh! have you had anything to eat/drink that may have included well water (or > been in a river or something) in the weeks before this started. argh, hard to tell around here. The town's water supply gets minimal treatment. They must do something to it, but they certainly do not chlorinate it and we still have to run it through a water softener to avoid getting major crud in everything the water goes through. Bummer when we also have hot water baseboard heat!
Fortunately, we've been favorably impressed with our PCP here. Man, I hope he can help tomorrow. This evening is the first time that my fever didn't start going back down on its own after a couple of hours. Hopefully that means my immune system is kicking in more......

Squirrely - 01 Dec 2005 03:17 GMT Nann,
Sweetie, it sounds like you have that virus that has been going around. On my one fms chat group all of us have had it. It last for weeks and weeks. I got rid of it for about two weeks just to get the respiratory part back and also the tummy is kind of weird again.
I had it for 8 weeks. I think it is probably the same one Duckie had. I thought I was never going to get rid of it.
I sure hope you start feeling better with it soon. My heart goes out to you. I really do know how it is.
Signature Love and hugs to all Good thoughts coming your way too.

Oh, I don't like the sound of that, especially as I woke from my nap yesterday with the right side of my throat feeling rather swollen. It was worse this morning, though the pseudoephedrine I took seems to be helping some - swallowing doesn't hurt as much. It doesn't seem to be going around here though as my PCP's nurse hadn't heard of anything like it and they are in a large, busy, popular practice. Well, if it is the virus, maybe he can help me feel better while it plays out.
At least the fever spikes have been a bit less traumatic this week, though they've become daily or twice-daily events. Mike now knows what my fever is doing by how I'm dressed (as in t-shirt, barefoot and hair up in a 69 degree house!). My body doesn't seem to be fighting this hard enough though with fevers only periodically.

Squirrely - 06 Dec 2005 23:24 GMT I hope you are doing better by now. I hope it has let up with you and gone away. I feel for you. I hear that about being dressed like that. I still have the hot feeling even though I got over that one and started it all over again.
You take care. Thinking of you.

Nann Bell - 03 Dec 2005 00:05 GMT > good luck with your doc appt today, nann. i hope he/she has some > answers. you must be very frustrated. > > diane thanks for the wishes! He didn't help as much as I would have liked, but I'm glad I went. He's leaning towards a virus that my immune system isn't jumping on as fast as it should for all the reasons we're all too accustomed to here. For now I'm to stay off Enbrel and mtx and avoid Tylenol in my pain cocktail as much as humanly possible so my immune system is free to cook the bug with fever. He did ask lots of questions and I think appropriately ruled out a lot of possibilities. And he said they've been seeing lots of different viruses lately - just one or a few cases of each, but quite an assortment.
Also drew some blood to double-check other things, inc. my albumin which was low 2 weeks ago when I had my routine mtx labs done. He suggested hitting the yogurt to help out my gut and switched that to probiotic pills from GNC after I explained about my milk allergy. I stopped and bought (and started!!) some on the way home. I like the fact that he recommended something that some docs consider "alternative".
Poor doc. He's commented before on how I relate and understand things differently than most of his patients. A couple of times I wanted to tell him I knew why he was telling me something, but was afraid I'd upend his usual flow and throw him off! LOL (I heard part of his conversation with the previous patient (older & hard-of-hearing) through the wall. Fellow was vague about why he takes Zocor!)
Mike's mentor is staying with us for the weekend because they are doing a wedding tomorrow as well as the Sunday service. I bought food at the deli for them to eat, they'll get their own breakfasts. I'm resting all day tomorrow!

Diane - 03 Dec 2005 00:41 GMT sorry you didn't get any specific answers, but it sounds like he does listen and at least he had some suggestions. i like your plan to rest all day tomorrow. (what is albumin anyway??) hope the probiotic pills help and the nasty bug goes away soon.

Nann Bell - 04 Dec 2005 01:14 GMT > sorry you didn't get any specific answers, but it sounds like he does > listen and at least he had some suggestions. i like your plan to rest > all day tomorrow. (what is albumin anyway??) albumin is one of those tests that can reflect liver problems which is why it's in the mtx tests. I believe it's a protein in the body, but don't quote me on that!
> hope the probiotic pills help and the nasty bug goes away soon. they do help, I am very happy to say. I'm taking much less simethicone. Fever in the evening is still hitting 100F+. At least I feel a bit more human and functional with the probiotics helping witht he gas and bloating. I'm heard so much talk here about them normalizing your gut when you're on antibiotics, but I didn't think of them at all for something like this. I may stay on them considering all the meds I subject my gut to. Wish I could eat yogurt - if only my milk allergy had been given to somone who doesn't like it to begin with! ;)

I am glad the probiotic pills are helping your tummy and such out.
Hope the weekend went well.
Firechief was asking about Mike the other night he called me.
You take care and know I do feel for you. Hope you are doing much better if not great today.
