Hi Everyone!
Sorry I haven't posted (even lurked) lately. I've just been so busy.
Anyway, I've got a question about Enbrel...
For about the last 10+ years, I've been dealing with severe sinus problems
(congestion, post-nasal drip, sinus infections, surgery) and have had to
stop/start the Enbrel so often that my rheumatologist is considering trying
something else.
But... It seems that after being off the Enbrel for 14-21 days (while taking
antibiotics to clear the infection) that it only takes one (sometimes two)
Enbrel shots to get the pain/stiffness back to a tolerable level. I asked
my Rheumy if it's possible to cut-back on the Enbrel... maybe one shot every
week or even two weeks... to see if it might stop the sinus infections for
re-occurring. It seems that once my sinus infections are cleared up, I
stay cleared up until I start the Enbrel again.
Anyone else here who takes Enbrel and deals with sinus infections? Do you
notice the Enbrel making them worse? How have you dealt with it?
Also, anyone else notice a major relief in arthritis pain/stiffness when
they have a sinus infection? Is it the anti-biotics or is it that my
immune system is so busy helping my sinuses that it doesn't have time to
attack my joints?
BTW: For those who don't know me, I've had RA & SLE since 1989.
Thanks a bunch!

Hi, Kendall! I think of you often and have been wondering how you were doing
- also remembering that we were more likely to see you in the winter when it
isn't as much fun to be outdoors ;)
No direct advice on the Enbrel and sinus infections. Mine have been much
better since the last round of allergy injections. I do know that some people
have reported increased sinus problems on Enbrel and that makes me wonder if
a change might indeed be best for you.
What is your RD talking about changing you to? I'd think it'd be best to
stay on something that is a weekly shot, such as Humira, rather than go to
Remicade as it's easier to take a break from a weekly shot in case of other
illness. If you get an infection one week after your Remicade infusion,
you're stuck with it in your system for a while.

Hi Kendall,
Sometimes I go to the boards at arthritis.org, and recently there was a
thread regarding feeling better when taking antibiotics-however no one
agreed as to the reason.
There is a group out there (I think it's www.roadback.com, or the
roadback foundation) promoting treating RA and certain other types of
arthritis with antibiotics, and there has been some success with it
(supposedly). Another theory was that perhaps the immune system is busy
fighting the infection, too busy to bother continuing attacking the
joints.
I do take Enbrel, but haven't had any problems with sinus infections,
so I have nothing to offer you there.
I hope that you can find some kind of resolution,
Charlene

Kendal.
I have Sogrens and take enbrel 50 mg once a week.
About 3 months after starting the enbrel I thought my Sogrens was a bit
worse, so I mentioned it when visiting the RD. The response I got was
that it was a minor side effect. ie the enbrel tends to dry up saliva,
nasal secretions etc. This might explain the recurrence of your sinus
infection - not enough mucus to fight the infection, also reducing the
flow of detritus out of the sinuses.
