i've had my new ankle/foot brace for about a month now. it's molded to
the shape of my foot and ankle, the exterior made of taupe leather and
ties up the front. it's not as ugly as it could be, but i need to wear
gigantic tennis shoes with it (anyone remember the seinfeld episode
where kramer wore the giant tennis shoes??).
it's taken me a while to adjust to the brace. it set off some plantar
fasciitis that had been dormant for 15 years. just what i needed. but
they adjusted the brace and that's better now. i walk much better with
it on and am honestly more comfy with it on than off now. but i worry
about blood clots. since i have virtually no movement from mid shin to
my toes, aren't blood clots a possibility? not to mention muscle
atrophy? and keeping the few unfused joints i have down there mobile? i
know these are questions for the brace person (i can't think of what
she's called) but she's out with knee surgery for another month and a
half.
i'm not freaked out about this. just wondering.

Diane, wish I knew some answers. Even with braces, there seem to be side
effects.

Diane I was in a plastic (big pvc boot) splint for my ankle on and off
from August to last week in October. (I had surgery then and removed
the problem.) My doctor told me that 4 weeks is the max without
effecting the muscles and tendons. So it was out for 10-14 days and
then back in for 28 days. We kept up this type of schedule until
surgery.
Good luck
Vickie B.
I walked DOWN (for emphasis) stairs today for the first time in nine
years without pain! My kids were thrilled! (They hate Mom always
looking for the elevator or crab-stepping down stairs. Or when it's
really bad going down backwards!)

Talk to your doc about therapy and/or exercise. Whenever something's
bothering you talk to the "expert" (or the one who should have the
answers). Those are legitimate concerns and your doctors are supposed to
put your mind at rest about such things. Maybe you can sit in a hot tub
and play footsie with someone you care about...

yup, i realized today i need to make a list of my questions and go to
the podiatrist who referred me for the brace. then i can get a couple
of nice cortisone shots at the same time.
norman, i sit in my giant whirlpool every night and hold my ankle under
the jet. my foot's fused in so many different places (not surgically,
just from RA) that it doesn't play footsie very well any more. :-(
vickie, congrats on no pain!!!!! makes it all worthwhile.
