It's been since January 19th that I have worked a full time job. It
was at this point in my 48 year old life that I decided to quit a very
good job and seek Social Security Disability. In 6 weeks give or take
I was approved the first time out. I have AS and they approved me for
Disc Degeneration. The past 11 months I have kept busy but today I
start a PT merchandising job. After a successful sales career in the
food business this isn't what I envisioned my life to become but with
SSD saying you can only earn up to $830 a month while disabled it's the
next best thing for me. Those without the pain we go through with
Arthritis will ever understand our pain. I woke up this morning stiff
as a board especially in my lower back but ready to tackle a whole new
world. Everyday is a fight but those of us have to fight on the best
we can. Say a prayer for me today if you would. Thanks and take care.

Best wishes on your new job. There are days I wish I could work
part-time.

Just remember to take it easy--it is not hard to do too much--as my children
are always telling me!!) Best on the new enterprise

Good luck on your new job!
I didn't know we could make $830 a month. And you can still keep all of
your SSDI? I wouldn't mind going back part time, especially if I could
just tutor kids in small groups or one on one for a school. I don't
miss the job I had, but I do miss being with people. Since I live alone
there are times when I go to the supermarket just to see people and talk
to another human being. I can't do anything where I'd have to stand, but
a nice little desk job would be super.

Check out the reading/literacy programs at your local library. They are
very active here. I realize that's volunteer, but it would give you
somewhere to go and be with people, and to find out just how much work you
could handle.
Just an idea.

That's a REALLY GOOD idea, Jo! Now why didn't I think of that :)))
Thanks! I guess sometimes we miss the opportunities that are right under
our noses, especially since I'm in the library every week or so :))

Carole, here's a link to the government page about working and SSDI benefits
- it is $830/month that you are currently allowed to earn while on
disability.

Everyone on here is so nice and supportive. God bless each and
everyone of you. I ended up working from 8:30 till 4:30. How brutal.
I couldn't even stand after the fifth hour I was in so much severe
pain. Neck (fused from C-3 to C-6), shoulders(I have Adhesive
Capsulitis) low back all discs degenerated and hips which I was told my
a Orto Surg. eventual double hip replacement surgery. I do not mention
all this for a pity party. Far from it. The severity seems to have
taken place after I stopped taking Vioxx as I mentioned before. With
the Anky. Spondylitis I am stiff 24-7-365. That's what hurt me today
was the stiffness and rigidity. Last year at this time I was working
full time but had problems but not the severity as now. Why in the
past year has this happened so fast? As for the job I told my boss 4
hours tops a day and she said that is fine. Today was training and she
said there won't be anymore of these. But standing most of the day and
merchandising batteries and razor blades is very difficult as well as
Candy. As for SSD it is $830 but I was told I could work 9 months in
total and make whatever salary I could. Once the 9 months is up you
can never do that again as long as your on SSD. Then the way I
understand it is you can work 36 months and make the allowable
allowance and then you have to make a decision to either stay on it or
go off of it. Some of this is hard to understand. I have learned much
and been humbled the past year. As a once successful salesman I was a
tad egotistical but never rude to anyone. But when I worked for major
companies like Nabisco and Heinz I was on top of the world at one time.
Now as a part time merchandiser my life because of this disease has
changed dramatically. I now look inside the soul of a person and try
and find the good. Never again will I look down on anyone that works a
regular job like a clerk or blue collar profession. Perhaps this is
Karma for the way I have behaved towards those less fortunate then me.
Even at 48 I am still learning what life is all about. Thanks for all
your support and I offer a blanket prayer that all of you find what you
are looking for.

Glad you survived the day. Hope the shorter days will be more tolerable.
As for the SSDI and the "rules". Be very careful about believing what
anyone tells you. There are very few individuals that understand all the
ins and outs of the rules. (I'm a CPA and have a pretty good grip on the
Internal Revenue Code but find some social security rules nearly
incomprehensible)
I can pretty well assure you that after 36 months it won't be you that gets
to do the deciding as to whether or not you are still disabled. Cases are
reviewed periodically and approvals can be reversed.

good luck! I hope the job works out well for you. I keep thinking I could
handle part-time work of a gentle sort, but all those jobs around here are at
least 25 miles away and between the effort of the drive and the cost of gas,
the payoff isn't worth it.
