"Cure" of the Day

Walt Hanks - 22 Nov 2005 01:19 GMT In honor of Annie's trials today, I think it's time to revive an old tradition here - the "Cure of the Day" vent. This is where we get to vent about what some well-meaning idiot told us, or what some supplement pusher tried to con us into buying. We all laugh, realize we aren't the only ones with family members/friends who are dumb as a post, and move on.
I'll start with a classic. The WD40 cure.
Yes folks, a man walked up to me in the grocery store about 14 years ago and mentioned that he had seen me using a cane and wondered if he could help. His suggestion, which he guaranteed to work, was to buy a big bucket of WD-40, soak my joints real good every night, then wrap them in Saran Wrap.
With that, he walked away. Didn't even wait for my witty reply (which could have been a long wait - I was dumbfounded).
So, what was your favorite "cure of the day?"

I hear that one often enough, but it is still a surprise when someone (I've never considered particularly "religious" since that's a subject worthy of avoidance at all costs) says it.
Had never heard the WD40 cure, heard about drinking apple cider vinegar (with honey of course), or taking Coral Calcium (apparently other calciums are not good enough), or going vegetarian, or going "no" carbs (meat and dairy products primarily), or hee-hee, haven't thought about some of these in an age...
Thanks it makes me laugh, and I really needed it. You are so sweet (oops, supposed to be avoiding sweets -heeheeheeheehee)!

Ann - 22 Nov 2005 02:04 GMT It's not a cure suggestion, but it's funny. A relative of mine told me my feet and ankles would not be so swollen if I didn't drink so much water. Guess she thinks all liquids go right to your feet. I wonder where where it goes from there?

The real problem for those who think this way, no matter what they do they are likely to get sick themselves. And have to deal with guilt along with illness or disability. It can be a stuborn one to fight. If you are brought up thinking this way it is very hard to get to a point where you find yourself worthy of anything good.
Its close and evil cousin is the notion that women in particular are supposed to endure pain, that they deserve it because of Eve and the apple.

About a year and a half ago I was on a low carb diet. It was great for taking off weight but my arthritis acted up enough for one of my doctors to diagnose the gout component of my problem. I'm doing a whole lot better with an anti-gout medicine added into the bunch.

janersagain - 22 Nov 2005 15:07 GMT Ah, MIL always told me to sip a shot, or at least a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Helps with getting rid of arthritis pain.
Plus I did find out it doesnt clean a coffee pot as well as white vinegar does :)

Seems actually to still work, but when I'm stressing I want candy (though I've noticed that dark chocolate doesn't affect me the same way joint wise as milk chocolate).
It all started after reading a report (that I can't find now) from a study done in NY (I think) where the doctor found that RA creates a carbohydrate in the joint which "helps" the inflammation to get going good.

I try to do that still. Stay away from white bread and such. Trouble was I LIKE beef. So I was eating far too much on the diet. I do try to stick to better carbs and lower purine protein sources. A nice steak doesn't look quite as tempting anymore since I know I'll have a quick and painful reaction.
I cracked a bone in my hand in August and it only hurts now if I'm not careful what I eat or if I miss a pill. It's my own personal pain barometer.

Sorry about the break. I've got a broken upper arm, but that's a whole *other* story of horrors. I'm thinking I don't like November much (hee).

Believe it or not...I tried it on my hands a few years ago....didn't help. On the other hand it works great for neutralizing skunk spray on leather boots. :o)

Sunny52 - 22 Nov 2005 13:19 GMT Can't say I've heard of the WD 40 cure.
A well meaning friend told me to buy some good quality vodka and a box of white raisins. My instructions were to empty the vodka into a large container and add the raisins. After a few days of soaking in the vodka, I was to "eat a handful of raisins every day' and soon my rheumatism would disappear.
After she left I had a good laugh!

Well, your rheumatism would still be around, but I bet you wouldn't care so much (LOL)!

DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 23 Nov 2005 03:54 GMT If I exercised every day, I would no longer have an immune disease or any other of the diseases that are "all in my head." Since I don't have RA, I clearly don't really have arthritis and should not tell people that I do. Sheesh!

Did you know that Tahitian coconut milk is superior to that of other countries?) who was a Shiatsu massage student who tried to get me to attend a seminar at her school led by a fella who had supposedly cured many illnesses by doing acupuncture.............. on DOLLS!!!!!
Now I believe acupuncture can have beneficial effects that Western medicine simply cannot understand, but I truly believe you must do the acupuncture ON THE PERSON! I really don't think the doll act would do it. The most annoying part was that I had a fair amount of respect for her partner that began to waver when I realized what a nut she was committing to. And at the time, I really needed a good laugh, but I had to choke that one back until later when I could recount it for MIke.
