We have been searching the newspapers and online for some time now to find
another fur child to fill out our family. The last of our poodles died at
seventeen years of age a few months ago. She went to join her twin sister
who died last year.
We still have the two cats. Jake the consummate Siamese gentleman, and
Molly the independent formerly feral Calico. But our house is empty
without a dog.
Yesterday we found and chose our newest. She is a four week old Border
Collie girl. Her face and ears are while, but there is a black patch over
one eye and black on her body. Also white feet and legs. A lot of the
white should dapple with gray and she gets older. She was bred by a woman
that trains stock dogs. I'll have pictures in a few days that I can post.
It never even occurred to me to take a camera along yesterday.
Now we have to come up with a good call name for her. Something Scottish
and distinctive that contrasts well with Jake and Molly. (I wish we hadn't
wasted the name Molly on the cat. She has never once responded to it)
Funny how fast I went from yesterday being very undecided. I liked several
pups we saw but they were all being sleepy little blobs and I had now real
preference for any one out of five girls I liked. This morning I woke
Charlie up to make him call to make sure they didn't sell MY puppy out from
under me.
We will likely pick her up on my birthday, December 6th. St. Nicholas Day.

Well, since the cat is not responding to Molly, call the dog Molly and
see what happens, LOL :)))
I am taking Scottish Gaelic at present and my favorite female name is
Catriona (pronounced Ca - tree - a - na). Another thing you might want
to consider is naming her after one of the Scottish islands. If and when
I get another dog, I'm going to name him/her Skye as Skye is a beautiful
place. Or just look at a map of Scotland and pick out something from the
names of the towns :-) If you want something in gaelic, let me know and
I'll see if I can find it for you.

Oh, and I forgot! Congrats!!! :-)))) Border collies are super dogs!
I've never had a border collie, but I've had a regular collie and a
sheltie and I adored them both. I'm sure you and your new baby will get
along wonderfully :)))

Congratulations, super news. Just remember that a Border Collie is born
to work. You will need obedience and most important, you need to find
her a job. Bored Border Collies, Aussies and Cattle dogs become barky
and destructive. If you don't give them work they will make up their
own, sometimes it won't be what you want them to do. Have fun and I am
looking forward to pictures.

A couple of things will help. She is from working stock and the breeder is
a well known stock dog trainer. Part of the price of the pup includes her
going back home for a week when she is about six months old for either
obedience or stock training. I chose this pup in part because her mom is
the trainers "personal dog". The one that always goes with her in the cab
of the truck, etc. So I'm hoping this pup will be more or a people dog than
some Border Collies. Her jobs will be to take care of me and to keep
Charlie from sitting about doing nothing. He can't wait to have a dog that
will play with him again. She will be taught that I can't hear and to let
me know when there is someone at the door and fetch the phone and hopefully
to wake me in an emergency.
We have a large back yard and there is a six month old Border next door, so
she will have a playmate.

Sounds great Jo. The Hearing Ear dogs do great work and there are many
programs to accomplish this.
My Aussie will be two in January, she has recently showed signs of
protectiveness and possessiveness, something I will need to keep under
control. She is coming into her maturity and is trying to find out
where she fits in the scheme of things. My Dobes keep her in her place,
which is a real help as she is so pushy. Her father is a top cattle
working dog and she has lots of his drive and intelligence. I have just
recently started her in Rally and her obedience performance has improved
dramatically. She is a real busy little girl and a ball of energy.
Good luck with your girl, sounds like the breeder has her head on
straight which is just great.
I also like the name Morag. Sounds strong and full of character.
Keep us posted.

Yay for puppies! Now the name...hmmm...how about Mhairi, or Elspeth, or
Fiona. Then there's Maisie, or Maggie. I could go on all day. You'll know
who she is when you see her again.
Congrats on the new addition!

Awwww she is just beautiful and still has all that puppy fuzzy stuff on
her. I love puppies.
How abou Niamh (pronounced Neeve)?
My aunt had a border collie named Captain who would go out and bring in
the cattle all by himself. What a great dog he was and he would act
like a silly puppy if you offered him ride in the car.

Good for you Jo and heres hoping that you have a happy birthday. We have
added a new member to the household too. To begin with there were two
little winnie dogs, brother and sister that ran the streets of a little town
south and west of Houston. This kind lady adopted them and brought them
home here in Houston. She already had 4 dogs and here husband was not to
happy about two more. She had them neutered and spayed only to find out
they had heart worms. The sister died and she put on the bulletin board at
out vet's about the brother needing a home. My wife it seems has been
keeping up with that board. LOL,,,, Anyway,,,, she went over to see about
the dog and hit it off right away. My goodness,,,, a half case of canned
dog food and half a bag of dry food came with the dog and she would not take
any money for any of it. She said she needed to know that he would be in a
good home and peace in her own home.
His collar says his name is Zip and that he has had all his shots. What
the collar does not say is that he is completely house broken and a very
happy little person. She said he is 2 years old and if I had been there she
would of been paid for all she did. So it goes.

seem to need to be useful--but is the lovingest thing around--now how about
Moira or Aisling

Sounds like she did what she wanted to do. A perfect opportunity for pay it
forward.
There are always pets that need care and too often owners that can't afford
it. And funds to make it happen. Or organizations that make sure its done
before they place pets that need a home.
If you were to pay for just one spay or neuter you would have made the world
a better place.
Sounds like your new fur person is a delightful addition to the household.

Jo this is great. I hope you get the doggie you want and that you really
have fun with it.
I am always thinking of you I hope you know. By the way the card you sent
me with the squirrel on it is still up on my refrig. I get to look at it
everytime I have to go get some pedialyte. I really enjoy it.
I also owe you an apology. I don't think I ever had your bday or if I did I
lost it so that meant I wasn't sending you cards. I am sorry I didn't mean
to forget you. There is one coming your way now though. I got it on the bday
list too so that I don't forget it again.
