I am a Marine and I was doing some training to get ready to go back to
Iraq. It is night time and I was on a patrol. I stepped into a hole
and feel down. I twisted my ankle pretty bad. By the time that I got
somewhere that I could check it out I could see the Swelling thru my
boot. The next day i went to go and see about it. The Corpman took
some x-rays but they could not get good angles because of the pain that
it caused. The x-rays showed nothing broke. All they did was wrap it
in an ace badage and give me motrin. I ended up having to go to the
emergency room because of the pain and my ankle looked really bad.
They took more x-rays and they came back negative also. The Dr. put me
in a splint for 4 days. After the 4 days I took the splint off and most
of the swelling was gone in my foot but not my ankle. I have the ankle
wraped in an ace bandage and it still hurts. I also have pain that
runs from the inside part of the ankle to my knee. When I walk it feels
like a string is being pulled . I also of what feels like a knot on the
top of my foot. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what is
wrong because I have had bad ankle sprains before but nothing like
this. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I really don't know about your ankle. I'd guess a really bad sprain.
But won't hesitate to do more xrays after the swelling goes down if it
still hurts. My own ankle has been in and out of a splint since August
and I feel for you!
Thanks for serving!

Are you back in the States at the moment? If so, get a referal to a
sports medicine specialist ASAP! I got lucky, the sports medicine
specialist I was referred to works with several professional and
national teams. So, when I needed his services as a rheumatologist later
on, I didn't have far to go. In my experience, damaged ankle ligaments
that don't heal correctly can cause a lot of problems later on,
especially in a career like yours . Please get in to see a sports
medicine specialist quickly.
Cheers,
Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I agree with everyone's advice to get back to a doctor to look at it.
But then you do have to remember - and I've been told this each of the
6 times I've sprained my ankle. "By the time it heals, I'll wish I had
broken it" or "Sprains hurt more and take longer to heal than breaks."
Keeping that in mind, see a dr for more x4rays and make sure that you
haven't damaged anything else in there.
Next I want to refer you to the web site that made the brace that
stopped me from repeated sprains. It's called Active Ankle Brace.
They also have a section called Injury Care with info and exercises
which I did faithfully. They really helped and quickly too. The website
is:
http://www.activeankle.com/
I do not have any financial interest in this company. I jsut think its
a great product for sprains.
Good luck to you and thank you for your service!

Good luck! My husband broke his femur after a bad jump (army airborne
infantry) Crappy care. Here's some motrin and c ya later after all the
testing was done. No ortho referral.
Try to get an orthopedist or even a family physician who knows what he's
doing... I know that may be difficult but vital.
I've always been told to ice any injured joint... so ice away and keep it
elevated.
Good luck and stay safe in the sandbox.

Please get to an orthopedist or sports medicine specialist for proper
treatment of your ankle. If you don't get proper treatment, it will
haunt you forever (speaking from experience here).
Most of all, thank you for your willingness to serve in our military.
You and your fellow service men and women as well as your families are
greatly appreciated. Thank you all for protecting us and our freedom.
GOD Bless You and yours

LCpl Stanton:
I also am a former service member whose troubles started with ankle pain. I
am in the medical field but will not reveal my position within it due to
liability reasons, but here is my advice. Report to your primary care
provider and ask for a referral to Orthopedics. Very precisely explain what
has been going on and for how long. Before you leave, ask for a copy of the
records for that visit and do so each time that you see a doctor (this may
come in handy down the road). More than likely you will need another X-ray
and probably an MRI. An X-ray will show any fractures that may exist but
will not show soft tissue damage, but the MRI will. You may possibly have a
bad sprain or a torn ligament, tendon, etc.... requires rest, meds and
ice/heat.
Please post to the group again regarding your progress.
I sincerely wish you the best and will pray for your safe return back to the
states. Thank you for your service!!

Sincerely,
