Hey Bob,
First advice would be, have you been seen by a rheumatologist, or do
you know that you have osteo-arthritis only? There are many different
forms of arthritis, and just as many treatments and options.
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as osteo-arthritis in a couple of
joints. For my own case, I have found that avoiding "bad"
carbohydrates (white flour, sugar, potatoes - though not sweet potatoes
[yams]) seems to help keep my flares under some semblance of control.
I tried Chondroiton/Glucosamine/MSM combo pill for 6 months, and didn't
notice any improvement (my mother-in-law swears by CGM, she's got osteo
only).
I'm also on medication, and we are going to change the one I have been
using (Rituxan-Rituximab). Seems I'm allergic to it, as I developed
systemic hives after the second treatment. I'm on hydrocortisone,
which appears to be working as well as Prednisone without the side
effects, and various pain medication. I also take Enbrel, which gives
me about 36 hours of relief, which is better than nothing.
I hope others come along (they will, it's a pretty nice group) to give
you their input. Most will ask if you've been diagnosed by a
physician, but only because none of us are doctors (I believe). Be
well.

Thanks Smokie Darling,
I had a knee operation around 4 years ago, and as part of the op they take
photo's to show what the problem was and what they did, whilst showing me
the photo's the orthopaedic surgeon said, "welcome to the club', he pointed
out a area of my knee with a dark shadow on it and told me it was
arthritis. Since then I have developed Gouty arthritis, for which the Doc
put me on allupurinol daily. Last time I went to the Doc I told him that my
knuckles on both hands have started to enlarge, also ache, he looked and
examined them and just said keep an eye on them and if any problems get back
to him. I will though after the Christmas Holidays ( a month in the USA).
I do appreciate the reply, and wish you all the very best
Regards
Bob

This statement makes it sound like you might have some type of
inflammatory arthritis. Bilateral pain is a sign of that in many cases.
As Smokey told you, get to a rheumatologist as soon as possible.
Every day can be important. Here's a website put up by a rheumatoligist
where you can find info on all types of arthritis.

Good Luck,

Hi from a fellow aussie, your doctor should be able to do some blood test to
tell you exactly what type of arthritis you have and regarding the aching
hands and knuckles don't wait you should be seeing a specialist not if you
have more problems get back to him. The waiting list for some Rheumatologist
is months you need to get onto a list now. For some reason aussie doctors
have it in there head that they can do more for you than a Rheumatologist
but let me tell you they know nothing compared to the specialist.
You will need to find one in your area then give the name and address to
your doctor and ask for a referral.

That'd be HCl, or hydrochloride, not HCI, which would be an iodised
hydrocarbon :-)
There's some evidence that fish oil helps reduce inflamation.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:
