I'm wondering if I have a new blood clot in the leg with the bad wound.
Can you
get a blood clot from wound vac use? This morning I woke up with an
achiness around the ankle in my left leg (first with the wound vac and
worst wound) the pain has moved up the side of my leg to behind my knee
and along side the knee. My leg is more swollen than the other but not
red or hot to the touch but does feel "heavy" I don't have a fever or
any other signs of infection. I am on coumadin but haven't had an INR
test in about 3 weeks. I'm usually pretty stable with my numbers. I'm
a little alarmed that I can feel the pain thru my duragesic pain patch.
I'm not sure what to do other than go to the ER which is not something
I want to do on a weekend. Any one have any other thoughts than ER?
Thanks -- DianeW

diane, one more crummy cloud to hang over your head, huh? does your
insurance have one of those 24 hr nurse lines you could call? someone
else here will surely have an answer for you. i hate for you to have to
go to the er too, but if this feels anything like clots you've had in
the past, you know what you need to do.

When I got the DVT my right leg was swollen just about double from the hip
to the ankle. It was uncomfortable, but not painful. It was not hot nor
was I feverish. If you think there is any chance that it could be DVT you
should contact someone immediately because it is one of the great old ways
of getting dead when the clot breaks up. Arthritis is a bummer, but DVT
is deadly.

I have been on CVoumadin for many years. I am shocked that you dont
have a doc..best to have a cardiologist who monitors your INR..u are
risking ur life not to have your INR checked IMMEDIATELY per ur docs
request..RUN..not walk to ur MD

I do have a doc that follows my PT/INR. I get it checked every month.
But it's only been 3 weeks since my last test. In fact, in the past 6
weeks I've had extra tests done by the plastic surgeon/wound care doc
who has been taking care of my legs before he cuts on me. I'm due for
a test this week as part of my normal care. DianeW

You can get a blood clot just from being alive. We thought *I* had a DVT
(and remember, my platelets ain't so great to put it mildly) so if you
think you have one, make an appointment for an emergency ultrasound.
With me it turns out my knees were so swollen that fluid had leaked out
of the back of the knee joint and was compressing some veins, causing
vein type pain (I'm a pain connoiseur -sp?-) and swelling, so emergency
ultrasound for me.

This *sounds* like a DVT. Please get an ultrasound ASAP. You know you
absolutely do not want a pulmonary embolism.

No, go to the ER. You're prone to clotting problems, right? Hence the
coumadin? I *hate* the ER, but this is a true case of better safe than
sorry.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I really think it sounds like you need to see or talk to your doc. After
all my surgery my right arm started to hurt and swell the afternoon I got
home from the hospital. But it there is any way you can call your doctor
and avoid the ER but get him to schedule you directly for a scan, it would
beat an afternoon in the ER.

I agree with everybody - if you can't contact your doctor, go to the
ER. Most of my doctors use an answering service and will contact the
doctor if it is an emergency. He may end up telling you to go to ER,
anyhow, but maybe he'll meet you there. Please don't wait - we care
for you.

Please don't wait! DH has had blood clots twice now. The first time he ended
up with a minor stroke......had a funny feeling in one lung late in the
evening and didn't say anything to us about it. Health Aide came the next AM
and we were on our way to Urgent Care and then to the hospital in an
ambulance. The second time with blood clots he ended up with the same 'pain'
and back to the hospital from the Dr's office by ambulance. They put the
'umbrella' in and he is on coumadin for the rest of his life. Both times the
blood clot started in the same leg.

The pain in that leg is significanly less this morning ad there is no
swelling or redness at all. Of course there was no redness yesterday
and only swelling when I was up. It goes away when I put it up. Plus it
doesn't hurt to bear weight. I'm wondering if it didn't just get too
swollen on Friday when I couldn't wear the compression stockings most
of the day and then they got huge. Since I've had to quit Bextra and
switch to Mobic my legs really swell a lot. I didn't take any Mobic
last night. I'm going to have to find a different NSAID cause this one
is really causing problems with leg swelling and blood pressure.
Thanks for the concern. I'm going to see how it goes today. The nurse
comes in the morning. I'm going to stay off my feet with a good book -
guess what I'm reading finally? It's one of yours I found in a used
book store. I'm crazy about only have hard cover books in a collection
and couldn't buy it new anymore. So I finally found Keeper of the
Light! I'm really enjoying it even though I've already read the other
two. It's been so long and my memory is so bad that I think I just
might read them again after I finish this one! LOL One thing I did
notice however, it's a tad bit heavier than your newer books so it's
not my carry around book. It's cloudy here - a perfect day to curl up
with a good book. I'll keep you guys posted. DianeW

diane,
glad you're doing better. and glad you'e enjoying KEEPER OF THE LIGHT.
when you said it was "heavier" than the others, i thought you meant in
subject matter. lol!

When I had my DVT I had swelling, fever, and redness. The leg was very
hard to the touch and measured about two inches wider around than the
other. The next time there was concern about a DVT the leg was
swollen, the pain was in the same area along the outside calf slightly
below the knee. The doc was convinced it was another DVT, but it was
the doppler which showed it was not.
Once you have a DVT you have post phlebitic syndrome and the area is
more prone to swelling and veinous pain frrom time to time. I know
that if I have more RA inflammation with swelling, I also have more
pain in that area.
The fellow who did the doppler said that most DVTs are on the inside
of the leg as oposed to the outside, but the day that I was in there
was one other patient beside myself who had it on the outside of the
leg.
But because you have thre clotting disorder you have to be especially
careful, as I am sure you are.
I hope it is just swelling. It is good that a nurse is seeing you.

thanks for the site Rose - I'll have a look at it. My previous DVT was
in my other leg and was on the inside of the calf. I had broken my foot
about 2 months earlier and had no pain or swelling with the clot at
all. It was quite large when it was discovered and the ultrasound tech
said it must have been there for awhile. My foot was turning blue which
is now I discovered it. Nothing like that now. DianeW

Diane W,
Did the nurse say it was ok or did you have a dr check it to make sure it
was not a clot. I am still concerned for you on this. I hope you are healing
well and quickly.
