Started with a rash....

I get a yeast like rash on my skin from the steroids from time to time.
And I guess it's time. So yesterday I called the dermatologist to get
in for a script for diflucan when all my at home remedies didn't work.
He could see me at 3pm same day or in two weeks. So in I go...

Well I came home with a numb nose and a skin biopsy.  (No -- the rash
wasn' t on my nose) But I had gone in last January for a bump on the
end of one nostril which the dr thought was just an infected white
head. I was supposed to reschedule for a biopsy but it went away and
came back a few times and time went by and I never scheduled the
biopsy.  Yesterday when he looked at it he decided it's in fact skin
cancer and did a biopsy then and there. Not only that he removed it and
cauterized it. I should have the results of the biopsy tomorrow but
I'm a little freaked out. He said what he did yesterday is probably all
that will be needed but we would know more when the biopsy came back.

I'm a little freaked out. It's been there for almost two years and I've
had multiple drs look at it and all told me the same thing until
yesterday. I really should have gone back for that biopsy earlier. But
different things I did made it go away like taking abx or using
bactriban on it so I thought the dr was right about an infected white
head.  I hope it's all fixed now but I'm still freaked out about it.

It's always something, isn't it?  On a positive note, the wound vac is
working fine and the bandage change went perfectly well.

If it helps, it's not melanoma: you'd have been dead a year ago if it
was. Always look on the bright side! hehe *evil grin*

I know just what you mean about test results. I get that at least twice
a week. My wife doesn't like seeing me get so worried, but in the last
year these have been twice a week potentially life and death verdicts.

Cheers,

Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Diane,

If it will make you feel any better I had skin cancer on my shoulder
that had been there for over 15 years.  I kept showing docs and they
said it was nothing.  It grew very slowly and finally they did biopsy
and it was, oops - brain fog, but the slow growing kind.

They did have to go in and take out some more to be sure they got the
paramaters, but not biggie.  No problem since then.  Sounds like this
is what yours might be.  Let's hope so.  Keep us posted.

I know about the, if it's not one thing it another.

Well about the diflucan - yes and no. I did get an rx from the dr but
the insurance company won't approve it except for one pill in 28 days
and the rx reads 150mg 1x day for 14 days cause I've got it so bad --
skin, mouth etc. So the pharmacy has to fax a paper to the dr who has
to contact the insurance company for pre-approval and then the pharmacy
will get an approval to fill it. The pharmacy gave me two pills to tide
me over till the paperwork came thru but as of tonight, nothing is thru
yet.  Go figure. Insurance companies dictate my health, once again.

diane, make sure there's no problem taking diflucan with your other
drugs. i think it's drugs that are hard on the liver that are a
problem. can't recall, but i know that when i had to take diflucan for
a month (!) i had to go off another of my drugs.

The dr changed the dose to 100 mg and it went thru -- although I still
have to go pick it up.  The dr knew what else I was taking and didn't
say anything about it. Do you remember what you had to quit takihng?
Thanks DianeW

diane,
at that time, i was on propulsid and had to stop it.

my doc recently prescribed one diflucan for a yeast infection. i
discussed my other meds with the pharmacy, remembering the previous
issue i'd had with it. he said since it was only one tablet, there was
little risk, but the other drugs i take that might have been a
contraindication were lipitor and arava.

Propulsid was listed as a no no on the papers from the pharmacy.  They
took that off the market didn't they?  Boy I sure loved that drug. It
really worked well!  I took it till I was out of it and then sparingly
till it was out of date!  LOL  I'm not on either lipitor or arava so I
think I'll be ok. He lowered the dose to 100 mg and I'm thinking of
starting to take Milk Thistle again while I'm on it. DianeW

That is sad. We have our problems with health care in Canada, but at least we
can get meds when we need them, not months later.

One pill a month?  Usually the instructions on the medication read,
one every three to five days until three days *after* symptoms clear.
I agree with your doctor.  Call your insurance office and appeal it.

Diane W and Ari

Diane, I sure hope you got the meds now and it is helping. That is terrible
about the insurance not wanting to cover it.

Ari,

I am so sorry to hear you have to go thru testing so much and have to get
results twice a week. Am still sending good thoughts your way also, even
though I don't tell you that much.
