MY RD put me on pred 10mg. How long before I know if I need it? He
wanted to give it a try in case there is inflamation. I hate this
drug.

How long before you know if you need it?
I'm not sure I understand your question.
How long have you been on it?
Is it helping your pain/inflammation?
Prednisone is powerful, and does have some serious long term side
effects.
But for some people, it's the only thing that works.

The pred is one way of his giving you a correct
diagnosis. When do you see him again. How many days did
he say to stay on it? Did he give you a plan to
withdraw from it?
Take the pred to see if you have an inflammatory form
of arthritis. Now if the doctor is not seeing you again
for months and months, .... I would question what he
is up to.

According to my rd this goes for dosages 10 and over, lower then that
should not cause too many side effects, so he says.
I am on 5 per day now, apart from not having periods anymore (but then
again I am 46 yrs of age so this could also be part of it) I am fine, no
weight gain anymore, on the contrary, the exercise and walking made me
loose weight so now I it's the same as it used to be without pred.
When I was on 10 I could do all the exercise and walking I wanted I
never lost a gram.
Also take milkthistle to keep liver as clean as poss

You know if you need it if after a few days of being on it the pain goes
away.
Yes it has serious side effects when taken long term. However, for me the
non steroidal did not work and I am now pregnant so cant be on a DMARD until
after the birth and pred has been the drug has enabled me to live normally
and with practically no pain. A lot of weight gain and excess body hair in
my mind are better then not being able to get out of bed in the morning for
me. It is also about the safest of the drugs used to treat RA to be on
while pregnant.
How long does he want you to be on it for? I think its only long term use
that carries the risk of the serious side effects I think short doses are
fine. Do you hate it because of the long term side effects or does it
effect you mentally? I know some people seem to hate it because of the
mental changes, they say it makes them depressed or bitchy or unable to
sleep etc.

Kim, I have decided not to take it until he has a diagnosis of the type
of arthritis.

You don't know what's wrong? Are you having pain?
Pred, imo, is too easy of a quick fix... yeah, I'll feel better ......too
bad I'll be more sick later on
I use pred only when absolutely available.
