Got home from work yesterday and there was a message on the answering
machine from my RD.
"Stop taking your medication now!!!!"
I can't get hold of her until Monday, but I've already stopped the
Sulfasalazine.
I saw my GP today, and he said that between the Sulfasalazine and the
Voltaren, it was most likely the Sulfasalazine that caused something to
show up in my last blood test.
Unless some other miracle drug shows up soon (I want my Bextra back,
damnit!!!), looks like I'll be trying Enbrel next.
Kelly - 05 Nov 2005 21:42 GMT
Despite my bad experience this week Brad, Enbrel is the best thing invented
since electricity to me. Would I have taken it for 3 years if I thought
this would happen now - YES!!!!! It has given me part of my life back
easily with next to no side effects (sinus infections aside and now that I
have the personal steamer from Vicks I don''t even think that would be an
issue. Keeping in mind this side effect is about at at .5% chance (note the
point) this is pretty rare.
Go for it if they offer it! I hated sulfasalazine so that was a no issue!
Hoping the best for you!

Enbrel has been the best for me. It has worked even better than
remicade did. I am one of those individuals who experienced the
opposite result to what most people here have. I thoght I was doing
well on remicade but my esr was never lower than 48. Now from enbrel,
it has been in the 20s. I have not had that in more than35 years.
People comment on the difference in me.
I need to get one of those Vick's Steamers I think. I am on my
second round of antibiotics since school started, and this infection
seems pretty entrenched so it looks as though i will need another
course. Maybe the steamer would help my chronic hoarseness. I cannot
remember what my voice is supposed to sound like I have been hoarse
for so long. I hate that. It is a little problem, but for me- as a
teacher- it is major. I just want to be able to sing Happy Birthday
again when a student has their special day. :(
My sad lament for the day...
(Mini pity party over)

I would also suggest you consider having a endoscopy done to check for
reflux. One of the symptoms for that is a hoarse throat or continual
coughing. I have reflux and can tell when I've neglected my Gaviscon
as I start being hoarse and having to cough a lot. Good luck. I'm
sure that as a teacher, it is a real hassle.

I have been on prevacid for about ten years, and felt that the reflux
was well controlled. I was recently prescribed to take it twice a day
though just in case that is a contributing factor.
Thanks.

I keep wondering if you have had your thyroid checked as it can cause a
husky voice.

Scary. But take comfort in that your RD cares enough about you to call.
Good luck.

Brad,
I'm sorry that you're having to come off of the sulfasalazine. Don't
you hate that stuff? Do your pills leave like an orange residue on your
fingers?
I am on that as well as Enbrel and MTX and prednisone.
Reading everyone's story here about how Enbrel changed their lives
makes me sort of jealous. I wish that it would do the same for me. I
would have to say that, on most days, things are better than they were.
Just not as good as I'd hoped they would be. Searching for the right
meds just sucks-I feel for you.
I hope that Enbrel works a miracle in your life. (I also hope that you
have health insurance-wow, is that stuff expensive!). I also hope that
it works for you right away.
Please let us know how you make out,
Charlene

Charlene, you are not alone. My mtx/Enbrel combo (with NSAIDs) works better
than mtx/Arava did, but it has not been a miracle. Fatigue, stiffness and
pain are all eased, but all are still there. Fatigue-wise, it's like I just
hit a wall in the afternoon. It's really annoying to not get a miracle.
I'm trying to stay off pred (long details involved there) but some days I'd
give anything for that little boost..........

Brad,
Might want to try humira which has a slightly different side effects
profile. I am on enbrel now as humira didn't hold for the two weeks it
needed to for me and my insurance would not ok once a week.
I know side effects are possible but I feel like the biologics offered
fewer side effects than any other DMARD and sure as heck less than any
of the NSAID's did for me.
And for the rest of you
think Neti Pot <G>

I think the Neti Pot saved me from having this cold -
now in week 8 from turning really ugly with infection
needing antibiotics.

Follow-up:
I was able to talk to my RD today, and it was not the Sulfasalazine that
caused the problem, it was the Voltaren SR.
The bloodwork I had done just over a week ago showed some issues with
the liver functions.
She is trying me on Naproxen E as an anti-inflammatory before we take
the Enbrel route.
