Pardon me if this has been covered (I've cross posted this to the
running newsgroup) but I'm desperate. I did a google
search on how to make my own conformable gel ice packs for my knee
with no luck. I figured you all are experts at joint pain so I
thought I'd ask here. I've just had a total knee replacement and
have found the frozen peas/water in freezer bags, etc. cumbersome to
use as compared to the conformable gel packs my physical therapist
uses. They conform front and back and need very little attention.
Does anyone know a way I can make these in my kitchen?
Regards,
Lou

Have you called the drug stores? They should have some comfort gel packs in
stock and will deliver. I have two of the small ones that came from the
kids section and wouldn't be without them. One for each side of my kneecap
lol!
Once I damped and froze some dish towels, took them out, gave them a twist
and wrapped around my knee, they lasted a surprizingly long time.
Can your physio sell or loan you one? Maybethere is a hospital supply store
on-line that can courier a couple.
No way would I make one of those those things at home. To many chemicals.

I just put rubbing alcohol and wate in an ice bag, about half and half and
adjust the proportions for the temperature of the freezer so that I get a
slush. Works just fine and is cheap.

I used a gallon size double bagged plastic with lots of
ice. I kept it in a bucket on my bed and it lasted for
about 12 hours. You don't want it on your knee that
long -- just long enough to numb things a bit and then
back into the bucket. Also good it the bags decided to
spring a leak.
