I just received my messages that have accumulated in the last 2 hours and
there are 154 of them.  I doubt if 6 or 8 of them are actually anything that
I need to read.  I've heard not to try to remove posters since that just
verifies your address.  What do all of you do?  I am so tired of this.

Gwen, I switched over 2 years ago to having an email addy for newsgroups
only. I set it up without a reply to addy and haven't had any spam since. I
only give my proper email addy to friends, so that helps too..

I have three email addresses that I check, a family and friends one that I
check several times a day.  A hotmail one I always give out for commercial
use.  Bank and credit cards and sign up type stuff.  It gets checked every
few days and mostly deleted after a quick glance at the message sources.
And a netzero one I use for newsgroups.  I check it once in a while as it
gets a humongous amount of spam.  Once in a while it does get a message from
an internet friend and then I send them the address I check.

I do block senders on the family and friends address as well and a few
choice words.

I am slowly switching all my e-mail over to gmail.  The spam filters
on Gmail are excellent.  I get almost no spam in my inbox it goes into
the spam folder which is automatically emptied weekly.   The account
is free and you get tremendous space, almost 2.6 gb of web/server
space.  Huge! I am sure it is much more space than your ISP provides.
You can set it up to download into outlook and you can copy your
outlook address book into it.   It is also free!   Great deal and your
e-mails are automatically threaded.   Just sign up for an account and
let everyone know your new e-mail.

I have just one!  and I belong to several eloops which I am interested.
I still delete most of my mail without reading it.  If the subject
line or sender don't catch my attention it is gone!  I never respond to
anyone I don't know.  I do have really good spam stuff.

In fact, I receive much less spam in Gmail (1 spam in about 2 weeks)
then my regular comcast account, and I use gmail for this newsgroup.
Now that Google does not publish full e-mail address in google groups
it should be less likely to have your e-mail picked up by a spam bot.

I haven't gotten spam in six months, since I munged my addy.  It looks like
a random collection of characters so spambots think its spam and it never
gets picked up.  Of course, I had to let my friends of the change.  Even my
email newsletters haven't produced any spam since the change.  Nice.

ymmv of course.

I also use a fake address for my newsgroup...I started doing this a long
time ago...
I have 2 email addresses that I use regulary...My SBC Browser is very good
at sifting through the spam....I do check the spam folder though as
sometimes it puts messages from my friends in there...I scan it and then
empty it...

Gwen, have you checked with your provider? They may offer some spam
blocking at the server.
If not there are free programs such as SpamPal which will put spam in a
separate folder.

I use Mailwasher. You can check what's on your server before it comes
down to your computer and delete or bounce anything you don't want.
It's available at http://www.firetrust.com
