Hi, this is not a complain, just sharing my experience. I have been
diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in my hip and knee. The specialist said I
have the knee of a 75 year old and it would need replacing in 10-15
yrs, on a different occasion I went in for my hip, the same dismal
report, my hip is deteriorating. This guy had the bedside manner of a
coat rack. I asked him what I should do about my problem and he said,
excercise, I said I cannot do much excercise because I am in such pain
ongoingly, he said excercise is your only help, then he just left the
room. What a jerk. He was the same way the second time around. My
"good" hip just started in with the same pains. I hit a steering wheel
with my chest 22 years ago, my forehead hit the windshield. My neck
snapped back. I was wearing a seatbelt but it was in an older vehicle
and there was only a lap belt. I am a mess, have been for 22 years. I
am in the most pain right now that I have felt in years. Recently, I
developed some acute neck pain, worse than I am used to after 22 years.
I have put up with sleepless nights and finally could not take it and
broke down and went into a chiropractors. I stopped previously going as
the last one I saw was just hurting me. Everything seems swollen a lot
of the time. Anyway, this new guy has cracked me 2 times, I do not feel
any better, and I have an appointment tomorrow, Monday. This pain,
numbness, sleepless nights, throbbing, burning like I have a heated
coat hanger running down from my neck to my elbow has not stopped since
2 weeks ago this coming Tuesday, at times even my finger tips have been
numb. I am going nuts! I need some relief! I have been icing it and
taking nsaid. I couldn't take the pain last week and went into a clinic
and spoke to the doctor, he did not have me point where my pain was or
have me indicate otherwise. He sent me for an x-ray. The technician was
x-raying my neck and when I asked out of curiosity where she was
x-raying, she said the first 3 vertabrae. I said that is not where the
pain is coming from. She said that is what the doctor ordered. What a
freaking waste of my time. I was doing this on my lunch hour and into
my work day. I was so frustrated. Does anyone know how I can get a
proper diagnosis about this OA, the pain is getting to where I cannot
bear it any longer. I cannot just keep taking drugs. I need some real
help.

Hey, it sounds like you need a new doctor and a second opinion. Perhaps
you need to be referred to a Rheumatologist and an Ortho guy. Don't
give up, insist or search for new doctors. Also here is a website that
might help with some info for you:www.orthop.washington.edu. The best
of luck to you, you are not alone. There are some more of them where
people are talking about their plight and discussing on this.

you do need to see a rheumatologist. and one that has a heart and a brain.
as it sure seems as the one you saw didnt have either. I have OA and a lot
of pain. I have had 1 hip replacement and it helped me sooo much. sometimes
they don't like to do replacements if you are younger ,but there are some
meds that can help the pain. I take several pain meds and I don't like to
take meds but of the 2 choices its better than suffering so much.
I am sorry to hear of your pain and hope that you will see a doctor soon, IK
also wish you some relief soon

Look for a chiropractor who specializes in nerve and joint rehab and pain
management. Ask whether he uses massage, stim, heat, or trigger point
therapy to prepare the body for adjustment. There are some who know what
they are doing, but they are few and far between. do you live anywhere near
Minneapolis? If you do, I know a good one.

Time to change doctors. Was he an orthopaedic surgeon? My surgeon has an
absolutely shocking bedside manner, but I stay with him because his
skill as a surgeon is so so so excellent. That said, I really only see
him pre-surgery or for post-surgery follow ups. My rheumatologist is a
great doctor with an excellent understanding of how to talk with
patients. I was lucky to find him. You should find yourself a
rheumatologist you can TALK to and work with in finding help. That said,
he's right about the exercise. Without weight training I'd be bed
ridden. It hurts, and some of my doctors are scared of me doing it, but
in the end it's the only thing keeping me semi-mobile and probably alive
due to the cardiovascular fitness as well.

BIG mistake!

You won't feel any better. Chiro is pretty cultish and not based on
scientific evidence. You will feel a bit more mobile without having all
that cash in your wallett, though. A good chiro is also a skilled
physio, but these are like finding four leafed clovers.

I'd bet money you have herniated or at least bulging discs around C4-C6,
and they're pressing on spinal nerves. An MRI would show these up.

Get your general practice physician to refer you to a specialist called
a rheumatologist. you may need to try more than one to find one you can
work with. Get started now, as waiting lists can be long-ish sometimes
(particularly as the weather gets cold and symptoms worsen in their
patients).
Cheers,
Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

You have been given great advice here. I would just like to add. Here in
Oklahoma City, we have a place called the McBride Clinic..And Hospital...All
they do is Arthritis and Orthopedics...I was referred to my Rhuemy there by
my sleep doctor. My first Rheumy was a joke...She believed in FM, but acted
like it was my fault if I was in a flare, and never gave me anything but
Trazadone....
I fired her after she yelled at me...So sometimes you have to keep
looking...Ask around...Someone knows of a good doctor in your area....
Good Luck
Cindy

I've fired two doctors as well.
Dauphin, I do think Ari is correct, you need to see a rheumatologist
and perhaps ask him for an MRI of your back.
That is finally how I was diagnosed, and it was because I insisted on
it. The prior xrays that were done did not show the damage because it
was too early...but MRIs can pick up erosions quickly, as well as
things like herniated discs.
Good luck to you, I hope you find some relief,
Charlene
