Hi all,
Been awhile so this could get a bit wordy. Many of you are new and probably
don't know me. Have moderately severe DDD in lumbar, had cervical surgery to
relieve severe stenosis back in 2000. Had Ulnar relocation surgery last Dec.
to prevent further damage from my elbow.
New stuff. Have appt at the pain clinic on Monday to try to figure out
recurring severe abdominal pain. A bit of history. Have some diverticular
pockets, had bilateral hernia surgery done laproscopically in 2000 (entrance
point by bellybutton.) Had minor problem with surgery as some sort of device
didn't inflate properly and doc had to work somewhat blind. The abdominal
pain has been occurring a few times a year for the past 3-4 years and is
centered at belt buckle area. Docs thought diverticular problems initially.
Then thought kidney stones, but x-rays came back negative. Had a bout start
and I stopped wearing a belt which seemed to improve things tremendously. So
I started to believe I had scar tissue getting irritated from the hernia
surgery. Went and saw surgeon last week who did the hernias and he said he
thought the problem was being caused by a pinched nerve in my back. Now
there is some possibility to this being the case. The last severe bout with
this I found relief laying on my side on a loveseat couch which curved my
spine. Hydrocodone would not touch this pain. The couch helped greatly. What
I don't get yet is that the painful area is extremely sensitive to touch. I
don't recall any pinched nerves acting that way.
The pain does move around some, sometimes it affects my lower abdomen and
genital area. From what I can see on the internet the nerves to the
abdominal area are thoracic in origin. That is supposedly the only healthy
part of my spine! So hopefully I can get some answers at the clinic. Surgeon
would like them to either prove or disprove pinched nerve before ordering
extensive testing. Don't know if they can do that. The pain has been
manageable the last few days for which I am thankful. I would really like to
know what is truly causing this though.
Had to stop working the football games doing scoreboard engineering. My body
just can't take it anymore. The last game might have brought on the last
occurrence of the abdominal pain. Since the team has been enjoying great
success the past few years the stands are full. This causes me to have to
use many more stairs and ramps to get around the stadium troubleshooting
problems. Very, very hard on my back. I am exhausted after working them and
usually wind up with back spasms for a couple of days afterward. I will miss
the extra money before the holidays, but it just isn't worth it anymore.
My son Michael will turn 15 in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the b'day card
Jo! It is much appreciated. Have had to battle the "I want a cell phone"
arguments. After checking on packages and prices it is a very expensive
gift. Maybe next year. He is doing extremely well in school so far. Freshman
in high school. I'm not sure this is the same boy I had in grade school! He
seems to have caught on to the idea that school actually is fairly
important. Sure makes home-life easier on me (and him!) :-) Now if I could
just get him to do some chores and clean his room! lol
Am still playing golf as that doesn't seem to hurt my back much (when it's
not already hurting.) The season is rapidly coming to a close though. Have
had to scrape frost off my windshield the past two mornings-grrrrrr.
Booked a cruise out of Galveston just before Christmas so we could use up
airline vouchers from last springs trip to Fla. before they expired. Since
then, hurricanes have been top of the news. Worried about Galveston first,
now Cozumel is destroyed. Was planning on fishing and diving. The reefs have
been wiped out and the fish have left the area I read this morning. Hope
they plan on returning, but without reef who knows. It will be our first
cruise and I am looking forward to it though. Finishing the trip in Vegas as
I couldn't get flights to Fla. during that time.
I hope you are all better than can be expected and have a pain-free day!

take care of yourself--and the teenage room cleaning is probably not the
hill you want to fight on--I gave it up!! Just told my teen that as long as
it stayed behind closed doors...as far as the cell phone--we ended up
getting her one when they took the pay phones out of the school--shrug--feel
better--

Wish you were feeling better. Hope you at least get some good answers soon.
Doesn't seem like your son could be 15 already. The phone, room, and chores
are an uphill battle. Phone is good in that times you won't really know
where he is are coming soon, and you can call him and he has no excuse not
to call you. Look for a plan where you have some control and where you can
check the usage online more often than just the shocking end of month bill.
If I were to be in the position of buying another cell phone/plan for a teen
it would not even have text messaging available. That or unlimited text
messages. You would not believe how many messages a teen can send in thirty
minutes consisting of "love you" "love you more" etc and at 10 cents a pop
it can add up.
We keep chores and room directly related to cash with limited success. They
are broke. There is a really good football game tonight. I have a shot at
getting their room cleaned up.
We used to trade for rides but then their friends got cars. And money
worked better before they started getting part-time jobs. Now I have to
keep track of when they get paid cause they are still always broke before
payday.

How are you doing? Are you better from the bronchitis and asthma stuff yet
or is it still lingering on. Hope you are doing better.

We're doing pretty good. All the breathing stuff has cleared up.
Charlie thanks you for the BDay card. I hope the cooler weather is agreeing
with you.

Good to see you posting again Gary but sorry to hear about the new woes.
When I was a single parent I just decided that the messy room was
preparing him well for college life. Keep trying but don't expect
perfection anytime soon.

Gary, very good news about Michael. I know you are both feeling better
about that. So sorry about all the problems though. Do hope you won't have
to have more surgery, but can be relieved of the pain.

Gary - Sorry to hear about all the pain you've been having. What you
are describing reminds me of my scar tissue pain. I had it off and on
for years not knowing what it was. I twised in bed one morning and one
of the "adhesions", another word for scar tissue that adheres to
something else, tore or ripped. The pain was sudden and severe and
didn't let up for three weeks. Had another laparoscopy to repair the
adhesions where it was found that my original surgical spot, my right
ovary, was adhered to my colon and the back of my belly button and
several spots on the omentum which is a lining of the abdominal cavity
if I remember correctly. Basically the whole area was adhered together
like a spider web. Very painfu;. Had the scar tissue and adhesions
removed and that was almost 7 years ago now. I have one spot that still
bothers me from time to time but only as a nag, nothing serious. One of
the specialist I saw at the time told me that lap surgeries can cause a
lot of adhesions. Of course they were talking about hysterectomies so I
don't know how much that would be true for hernias but they do a lot
differently in laps that I don't believe is done in regular surgery
like pump you full of the gases and rinse you out with some kind of
solution afterwards. The surgeon told me that there was some thought
that that might lead to more adhesions. Give it some thought. Maybe a
second opinion from a dr other than the one who did your hernia surgery
is in order. Hope the pain eases....DianeW PS
We are going on a cruise to Cozamel out of Tampa after Christmas --also
worried about that since the hurricane.

Gary,
Sorry that you are having so much problems with pain... Having to give up
your job also sucks....But hopefully they will be able to give you some
answers and back on your feet...
Teenagers...As far as the room goes...Just rename it the Dungeon and Make
sure he keeps the door closed...put your foot down about dirty dishes and
food left in there, but everything else...Well if he can live in it...that
is a battle for him to win...Cell phones...When my kids were young it was
pagers...No we did't buy them one...
But if you do decide on the cell phone thing...Get him one of the pay as you
go...Set his allowance on minutes...When he is out, he is out...Bottom
line...Make some rules about where he can use it...I don't think kids should
be able to take them to school...JMHO....But as he gets older, it does give
you a little peace of mind to know that he has the phone with him in case of
emergencys...
Hugs Cindy(who is glad the cell phone issue wasn't around when the kids were
in High School)
