Went into the hospital. I woke up last night two times have very, very rapid
heart beat. the third time at 6 am, got up hacking with no hair ball. Was
trying to take pause (sp) I got to 140 and freaked so couldn't finish
counting it. So I was hacking and dry heaving so finally abuot 10-15 minutes
later got out BP thingy. Took BP, it was 153/98 with pause (sp) of 126. I
was also dehydrated. Fever (which dr says is not fever, but always normal
temp is around 96.2) was 98.3 by the time got to hospital it was 98.9. Have
been running in the 99 area the last two days. So it looked like pred was
not working.
So I get to hospital. Long story but they know my history.
The dr examines me. Says he thinks I have bronchitis and asthma. He sees I
am kind of dehydrated. So he orders chest xray, 2 breathing treatments, and
IV. So they do IV meds too. They gave me Benedryl, (not sure on the
beginning of this one) sodium medrol
magnesium citrate (could be wrong on the second part of this one) nurse said
it was muscle relaxer, that would relax the muscles in my chest and broncial
areas. Pepcid. She said yes she know it is not a stomach problem but that it
has antihistimine properties and will relax those muscles too.
Jim was late for work, not good for starting a job. Didi, Chris girlfriend
came down to stay with me and bring me home. She got there as they were
putting in the iv. She kind of looked funny and was acting weird when they
were doing it. I thought maybe she had a problem with blood. Well when we
left, I found out what it was all about. She said something was not right
with that IV. So she called her mom who was an RN and told her mom about it.
The thing that caught Didi's eye was that when they put the needle in I had
blood all over my arm from it. A lot of blood. I didn't think anything about
it because this has happened before. No one seemed concerned about it.
Didi's mom said they punctured my vein. So the IV was no good. Which by then
I knew something was wrong. I was going to bathroom about once an hour and
putting out a major amt of urine.
I had cotton mouth worse than when I got there. So I take it, the Fluids
went somewhere besides where they were. So I kind of agreed on that part.
But about 6 tonight, I knew something had happened. I forgot this part till
then. When I get Medrol, I have a bad pain reaction that could be bursitis
acting up. Major pain. I got it tonight. I go oh yeah, I forgot about that.
When they give it to me in shot, I get it like almost immediately. So that
kind of convinced me that her mom might be right since it took so long to
react this time. I have had it in IV before and it activated right away too.
The dr says I have acute Bronchitis, but yet my xray came back clear. Also
asthma kicked off by the bronchitis and whatever is in this air lately. So
he sends me home. No meds, just to keep taking the 20 mg pred for the next
three days and inhalators. I have to go back in if my fever gets higher,
dehydration any more, feel worse, etc.
So there is the story. Boy was I scared this morning. It was not a pleasant
experience.

I dont think that is going to happen Carole, the medrol is keeping me awake.
earlier it was the pain, but now the pain is gone and still can't get to
sleep. I layed down earlier and thought I was going to go to sleep but no
such luck. Thanks for the hugs.

Are you allowed to take Tylenol PM? When I was having trouble sleeping,
my doctor said it was OK for me to take that. And it helped until I got
back on to some kind of sleep schedule.

Wayyyyy too high for resting heart rate.

That's a mild hypertension BP. Nothing to really worry about unless it's
normally much lower than that. Mine's usually around that now, but
that's because of the massive amounts of drugs they're giving me.
> I
> was also dehydrated.
That's bad, but worse when you're sick. Kidney function is important! :-)

> Didi's mom said they punctured my vein.
Well, yeah, they have to puncture a vein to get the IV into the vein. If
they went through the other side of the vein, then you get bleeding
underneath the vein and that can be unpleasant. If they went through the
other side of the vein AND left the canular in there outside the vein,
then you end up with real problems. However, if they could push fluid
through the canular easilly enough, they probably got it back into the vein.
> So the IV was no good.
Well, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Did they come back and put a new
canular into a different vein?
> Which by then
> I knew something was wrong. I was going to bathroom about once an hour and

To me that sounds like they got the IV right: the fluid they were
hydrating you with was going into the vein, as it should. However, they
probably had the drip rate too high.
> I had cotton mouth worse than when I got there.
that could be some of the treatments they gave you. People I know get
that sometimes.
> So I take it, the Fluids
> went somewhere besides where they were.
Did your arm expand massively right under the IV site? If not, the
fluids went into the veins, where they were supposed to.

you're going to taper that pred, right?

Sounds thoroughly unpleasant. Rest up as much as you can, you've
certainly earned it!

Thanks Vickie, and Ari.
Thanks for the spelling on pulse, it would not come to me no matter how long
I sat here trying. ;-)
I know it has never been that high before the pulse. It got up to 120 before
because of the dehydration but never that high.
My BP is usually low but has been elevated at times during this three week
virus stuff. I was more worried about the 98 part. I usually am around 90
something over 55 to 118/70.
Ok from your discription they got it in there right. So hopefully it did all
it was suppose to do.
tonight I am coughing up small amts. No more hair ball coughing. it does
sound looser.
Nope they said to only take 20 mg for three more days. No taper. I wish they
would. I have adrenal insuffenciency and adrenal gland masses so I wish they
would be more careful with this issue.
I tried to sleep earlier but the medrol is making it so I can't sleep. But I
have been sitting around and resting in the recliner. Reading posts I had
printed out, making out cards, and just kind of being in lala land without
sleep yet. I figured I would check the group and then try again to lay down
and go to sleep.

((((((((SJ))))))))) Call your doc and check again on the pred directions.
Going cold turkey off 20 mg sounds like it will just make you sicker again!
No more hairball coughing is good. Maybe your body can rest some even if you
cdon't sleep. And it's good that your Xray is clear so you haven't gone into
pneumonia. Bronchitis of course just means inflammed bronchii, doesn't
necessarily mean chest congestion.
Overall, it sounds like a good thing that you went to the hospital, but
please do check further with your doc about that pred.

Agreed! Very strongly agreed! either that, or you'll have to go against
medical advice and try to taper with what you have on hand: 20, then 15,
then 10, then 5, then a few days at 2.5.

Maybe he wanted you to followup with your dr in 3 days..No way they would
want you to do the pred like that...That is just dangerous....
Mike has taken it many times for asthma/bronchitis and it is always in a
taper dosage....
And of course you cannot sleep right now...The evil drug..That is what I
call it... I hate it when Mike has to take it, but the alternative is much
worse....So it is the evil drug that saves his life...Go figure...
Praying that you feel better soon Jo...

Hope you are finally able to get some rest. Keep taking in fluids. And call
your doc about the taper. It's probably just something the ER doc would have
done if they weren't so rushed.

Squirrely, that was a horrible experience. Wish I could have been there to be
your nurse. I was good at starting IVs. A rapid pulse is no fun either, I had
that when my thyroid was hyperactive. I think you DID have a fever, if your
normal is that low. Medical types tend to think of 37 or 98.6 (depending on your
country) as normal, forgetting that there is a range of 'normal'.
Good vibes coming from Ontario.

Thank you all for the support, caring, prayers, hug, tea, chicken soup,
thoughts, etc and the advice.
Nann and all others that mentioned the pred taper. this is the way they do
it everytime I am on pred. Usually it is 4 days of 20 mg and off. Now this
time because it is worse, it is 6 days of 20 mg and off. The dr said to do
it this way too. I did call dr and ask.
Carole, I am not sure about Tylenol PM will have to check into it. I do take
Tylenol though. I take ativan at bedtime and that usually knocks me out but
with the pred and medrol, that keeps me wired so I can't sleep.
Joan, thank you for telling me about the iv and the pulse. I have hashimotos
but I get the rapid pulse alot from it. I also get the rapid pulse when I
dehydrate and when I am having a bad time breathing. So I should be used to
it by now but I am not.
I am sure I had a fever too. I have the chills also. I know my body and when
I get to 98.3 I have a fever. By 99 I am feeling so sick it is
unbelieveable. But they don't believe that.

I asked during one of my infusion what would happen if the iv went in
wrong and they said you get a large amount of fluid build up around
the iv site. It is quite noticeable. I get a fair amount of bleeding
when they do a blood draw from the iv. Whenever they change or have
to add bottles it tends to bleed, it is really not that unusual, so I
bet everything was ok.
Hope you feel better soon Squirrely, I hope you are able not to smoke

Thank you Lou Jean. I am still fighting with this stuff, but I could be for
months from what I hear. It is one of those viruses that don't want to
leave. I have heard some people have had this for three months.
I took others suggestions and am weining down with the pred. I had some on
hand. I took 12.5 for two days, tomorrow will do a ten and then two fives.
At least that will be better than dropping down from 20 mg. I am almost out
of pred though so I can't do it differently.
