Abdominal Cramps?

Hey, Gang, I need some diagnostic help here.  I had been out of my Arthrotec
for nearly two weeks.  Some stiffness, lots of pain and a new symptom that's
driving me nuts!  My abdomen cramps...spasms...whatever, it hurts! and then
I get a gurgle like water cooler being emptied. It's very audible because
Bob keeps hearing it, too.

I suspect it's my IBS, but could the lack of Arthrotec have stirred things
up??  I can't see the doctor yet because our records are still being copied
by Wright Patterson, and the new doctor we've been assigned won't give us an
appointment until we have our records.  My RD from Walter Reed called in a
prescription for the Arthrotec (which Wright Patterson doesn't carry) and my
MTX.  The other meds Wright Pat will refill in a day or two.

Does Arthrotec help keep IBS under control? It is an anti-inflammatory, and
my IBS has been described as inflammation of the intestines so I just
wondered.  Any of you med types ever heard of this?

I have just started it in the past week and I get bad cramps. My RD told me it
can cause diarrhea. I haven't had that but if it can do that I would think the
drug itself could cause IBD to be exacerbated, not lack of the drug.

sorry to say this, but that sounds like the stomach flu that I have had and
still having problems with. It not only carries the stomach flu but a cough
too.

If it is, and you get the back door trots and throwing up, you will not be
able to keep water down or in either. So please get some pedialyte. It
worked for me that was the only thing I could keep down or in. Please take
care.

I don't know about Arthrotec, but sulfasalazine (an older NSAID) is also
used for controlling some intestinal.stomach diseases. I've been on that
as well as Lodine, and it does seem to help my IBS.

hi dee tee,

i don't have answers, only empathy. my ibs occasional causes what you
describe: cramps that are miserable and an audible gurgling that's in
my left side about hip level. i often have diarrhea with this.

i was unable to take arthrotec because of the cramping and diarrhea, so
it's weird that the withdrawal of it would give you these symptoms, but
who knows?

sorry you're having to deal with this,

I couldn't take Arthrotec twice a day because it caused all kinds of stomach
problems, but I take it in the AM and it doesn't bother me.  Strange, huh!

I just started it last week, Gwen, and my gut has been in an uproar. The
information leaflet from the pharmacy says side effects usually disappear once
the body is used to the drug. I have considered going to once a day to see if
that helps. Did your symptoms go away when you had been on it for a while? It
*is* making a difference as far as pain control goes.

Joan, it bothered my stomach so much I couldn't take it enough to see if my
stomach would adjust!  I did better if I took OTC ranitidine for my stomach,
but still couldn't take it twice/day.

If you don't definitely need the "stomach protective" part, you can get
Voltaren/diclofenac sodium alone without the additive that supposedly helps
the stomach but bothers a large percentage of people.  That's what they
switched me to and I'm cruising on it.

Joan, my symptoms didn't go away as long as I was taking it twice a day.

Hi, DeeTee
I realize I'm a few days late, here, but could your RD from Walter
Reed call your prescription into a civilian pharmacist or to the
military mail order pharmacy?  Good luck.

I am doing great on Arthrotec 75.  I don't remember any transfer
effects going from Celebrex, (which didn't work very well for me), but
I had been on Bextra before they took it off the market.  The lack of
Arthrotec could have stirred it up.

I know it's closing the door after the horse is gone, but when I doing
something like moving or taking a vacation, I get enough extra to
cover any delays after I get there.  I use a civilian pharmacist who
delivers.  It's worth the extra I pay ($3.00 for generic and $9.00 for
most brand names - those not on the formulary list are $22.00).  I
have a couple of neighbors who use the military hospital pharmacy.
The last time I used it was a big waste of time.  I turned my
prescription in and sat down to wait for my number to be called.  They
finally called it and when I went up to the window to pick it up, they
told me they didn't have any in stock!!!  You'd think they would
have.....well, anyhow.  That's when we switched to a civilian
pharmacy.  I am the widow of a retiree.

Hope it is drug withdrawal and not the flu!

Loujean - I did get extra before we left.  But we were in hotels for two
months before we decided where to live and then got a place.  It's getting
things set up at this end that's taking so darn long.

Thanks, Hon

What's that old saying, "If something can go wrong, it will"?
Anyhow, is everything going all right now?  I hope so.

Better!  The Arthrotec quieted the abdomin within about 4 hours.  By the end
of the next day, they were gone.  That has got to be the wierdest side
effect I've ever had.  I guess my intestines are inflammatory, too.

Thanks for asking, Kiddo!
