Inflammatory Bowel Disease Linked to Other Illnesses
Patients had higher rates of MS, asthma, arthritis and psoriasis,
studies found
SUNDAY, Sept. 18 (HealthDay News) -- People with inflammatory bowel
disease (IBD) are also more prone to severe respiratory and nervous
system disorders, according to two new studies in Gastroenterology.
IBD includes a number of chronic ailments such as ulcerative colitis
and Crohn's disease.
The first study found a nearly twofold increased risk of multiple
sclerosis in IBD patients. The researchers from the University of
Pennsylvania also linked IBD to optic neuritis and other neurological
disorders.
In the second study, Canadian researchers at the University of Manitoba
found that IBD patients have a significantly increased prevalence of
asthma, bronchitis, arthritis and psoriasis.
"These studies remind us that the effects of inflammatory bowel
disorders extend to every corner of the body, including the lungs and
central nervous system," said Dr. Edward V. Loftus Jr., author of an
accompanying editorial and an associate professor of medicine at the
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
"The findings lend credence to the concept that patients with one
chronic inflammatory condition are more likely than the general
population to develop another," Loftus concluded.

Ah, yeah, but, like, DUH. all of these are autoimmune diseases.
OLD information; I have been reading about the connections between the
autoimmune diseases for over a decade.
On topic and out of date. . .

This concludes genetic iron excess to be associated with celiac.
<<snip>>
CONCLUSIONS: In celiac
disease, HFE gene mutations are common

Gastroenterology 2002 Aug;123(2):444-449
The role of hemochromatosis susceptibility gene mutations in
protecting against iron deficiency in celiac disease.

[Record supplied by publisher]
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Celiac disease and hereditary
hemochromatosis are common HLA-defined conditions in
northwestern Europe. We sought to determine whether there is a
genetic relationship between the 2 diseases and if
hemochromatosis susceptibility gene (HFE) mutations are
protective against iron deficiency in celiac disease. METHODS:
Polymerase chain reaction amplification using
sequence-specific primers capable of identifying the 2 HFE
gene mutations (H63D and C282Y) and the HLA class I and II
alleles was used to type 145 white patients with celiac
disease and 187 matched controls. Hemoglobin and fasting serum
iron levels in celiac patients were measured at diagnosis.
RESULTS: HFE gene mutations, H63D or C282Y, were identified in
70 celiac patients (48.3%) and 61 controls (32.6%) (P =
0.004). The C282Y mutation was associated with HLA-A*03 and
B*07 alleles in controls and with A*01, A*03, B*08, and
DRB1*0301 alleles in celiac patients; the H63D mutation was
associated with HLA-A*25 and DRB1*03 alleles in controls and
A*29 and DRB1*03 alleles in celiac patients. At diagnosis,
celiac patients with the C282Y mutation had higher mean
hemoglobin and fasting serum iron levels compared with the HFE
wild type (P = 0.0002 and .006, respectively). This was not
observed with the H63D mutation. CONCLUSIONS: In celiac
disease, HFE gene mutations are common and are in linkage
disequilibrium with different HLA alleles compared with
controls. A disease-specific haplotype that carries C282Y and
DQB1*02 is suggested. We propose that HFE gene mutations
provide a survival advantage by ameliorating the iron
deficiency seen in celiac patients.

Uh, Twitboy. I see you have found the way to cross post. You sent this to
arthritis, asthma, MS, none of which are called celiac disease. Your haemoglobin
is too low again, isn't it? Someone give Doughboy a transfusion.
And, sweetums, I am only posting this to the two groups I read, not the entire
world. Now lie back and enjoy your blood transfusion.

You really are a moron.
They propose that the gene protects from one of the problems associated with
CD - not that iron excess is somehow involved in causing it or anything
else.
If anything it supports the notion that low iron may be a problem.
Do you even read this crap? Can you?

Jeez .. how's that ... feeeeellllll ...
I don't agreeeeeeeee ..
And since I am now having more success in the medical field THAN ANYONE
IN HISTORY .. I might go with my own .. 'call' .. on THIS .. matter ..
But that is just .. me ..
I have corresponded with an iron overload patient who was INITIALLY
DIAGNOSED WITH CELIAC DISEASE ..
So .. this fella .. at the very least WASN'T .. 'iron deficient' ..
And I am supposed to believe .. these / they .. ??

You posted something that you obviously didn't understand, and when it is
pointed out that your interpretation is wrong, you suddenly don't agree with
your own post. Right.

That post really wasn't from Tomtwit. As Jim said, even Tom isn't stupid enough
to post porn from his real address. When I looked back through Google for that
link I found a thread in which Tommy refuted that statement then proceeded to
tell off medical people for child abuse due to neglect of things like iron,
blethering on as Tom does with all his .. method .. of writing.
