d'huit - 02 Oct 2005 20:06 GMT having hard time web surfing one-handed to check this out, keep messing up---is general body itching a sign of liver or kidney irritation? and can tylenol dosages near/at the top of mfg/fda reccomended safe levels cause this itching?
if so--is it possible thatt individual body tolerances for acetametafen (sp?) can be lower than what is considered safe max levels? and that at lower dose levels an individual body is ok with the lower than suggested tylenol doses?
i'm having general body itching with this 10/650 oxycodone apap, like i did with higher doses of hydrocodone apap a couple of years ago and recently with max doses of ultacet. the common component in all 3 drugs is tylenol/aceta. . and i'm wondering if too much tylenol (for my particular body, not above warning levels) is the real culprit of itching and not the hydrocodone, oxycodone or tramadol. we have me being listed as llergic to morphene, quinine and dirivs. and hydrocodone, but i'm wondering if it is actually tylenol and not hydrocodone by itself.

Hi Kate... Because of my brother's liver disease, I know that when bodywide itching stems from the liver, it means the liver is severely compromised/damaged. It's not able to do it's job filtering and the toxins flowing through the bloodstream cause maddening itching. Usually jaundice accompanies this type of itching. 'Irritated' livers rarely cause symptoms. Most never know their liver is irritated, unless they've coincidentally had a liver panel done at that time. Unfortunately, symptoms of liver disease show up when the disease is far advanced. I really doubt that's what's going on with you : ) My guess is it's not the acetaminophen the drugs have in common causing the problem, but, rather the opiates/opioids. Both cause our bodies to release histamines. Generally, the stronger the opioid, the more histamines are released. Many, many people experience bodywide itching when taking these types of drugs. It's listed as a side-effect in every drug reference I've seen. Most people with this type of itching can continue the med if they take an antihistamine at the same time. The itching itself is harmless. But, if you experience hives or other allergic type responses, you should stop taking the drug immediately and, talk to your doctor, as well. Hope this helps a bit : ) -- Hugs, Patty
d'huit - 03 Oct 2005 03:24 GMT helps a bit? it helps hugely, patty. whew! thank you! my brain was tripping wildly on the fact that i simply can't be allergic to every single opiod, (and whole groups) i'm put on. like what would be left?! so, i thought there HAD to be some other component or something.

Did a Google search on "Systemic Itching" and came back with it being related to liver function/disease.
I cannot take tylenol (acetaminophen) so I don't know (I *am* allergic to tylenol/acetaminophen), I do remember hearing
*****possible Urban Legend or something******
that taking tylenol as directed by the label for 10 days can lead to toxicity in the liver. Everyone is different, so why wouldn't your tolerance be lower? It makes *me* vomit, which isn't supposed to happen, but even when I don't know it's there, I throw up within 15 minutes of ingesting tylenol.
Might want to give your doc a call tomorrow. If you can tolerate motrin (many people can't), you might want to ask about vicuprofen (7.5 hydrocodone 200 ibuprofen).
Best of luck that you find something that helps you quickly, as itching all over is really a pain (and more than a little annoying as well).

I know how awful it is when I want to look something up, and I can't. You all (everyone here) have provided links before that saved me having to type up the search parameters.
I hope you find something that helps.

Charrlygrl1 - 03 Oct 2005 17:01 GMT I have nothing to offer other than that when I have taken percocets, they cause me to violently itch for hours. I hope that you can catch a break soon, Charlene
Navy1 - 04 Oct 2005 21:39 GMT Itching is a strange thing - ever notice how one spot can itch and when you scratch that spot, the itch seems to spread? I think the others have come up with some good ideas. My dad used to get the all over itching and it was just awful because my mom couldn't do anything for him. She did have some lotion, I think, which calmed it down some.
As to individual body tolerances for anything being below the average or considered safe max levels, one must remember that to get that average, there are a certain number of cases below that max and others above it. So yes, it is possible for your tolerances to be lower. I hope you are feeling better now. It all goes back to the old question-"How do I tell the difference between side effects, and the medication not working?"
