I tried it last month, my tummy didn't like it.  Now doing fine on Voltaren
alone, the NSAID component of Arthrotec, and I have most of a bottle of
Arthrotec 50 hanging around and feeled unloved and unwanted.  If anyone has a
possible home for it, let me know.  (you can email me privately if you'd like

Hmmm... Interesting. Arthrotec is supposed to protect your
stomach from the negative effects of the actual NSAID
itself, and you're finding a reaction to the component that
is supposed to prevent reactions... Could be an interesting
thing to keep an eye on this one, given that there has been
concern in the past about the carriage materials for tablet
medications, and while all the focus is on the primary
ingredient, there are other chemicals in there too.

I'd keep the bottle in the background for now, just in
case it may be needed for analysis or whatever.

Me too. I couldn't take arthrotec. I have taken voltarol retard
(generics) for about 20 years. From time to time I get a gut upset or
acidity. Recently I have taken a proton pump inhibitor when I have had
acidity and it seem to work.

My PCP said this is actually a fairly common response to the component that
is supposed to prevent stomach problems, that a good many folk actually find
it upsets their stomach rather than calming it.  He's the one who suggested
trying straight diclofenac, prescribing it after extracting a promise to tell
my RD the full tale.  I just happened to see him for a physical before I got
around to playing phone tag yet again with my RD's office over yet another
NSAID failure.

When I was on arthrotec, it gave me brutal gas.

I was already on Prevacid for duodenitis, and the two stomach protectors
may have been too much.

Now I am on Voltaren (diclofenac) and the gas problem has been solved.
The voltaren does cause occasional stomach problems, but given it's the
last resort in meds for me, I'll take it.

I tried Arthrotec for a while last spring and I had gastro problems
with it also.  It was giving me acid reflux and stomach aches.  I'm back on
Relafen, thankfully.  I, too, thought it was wierd that a drug with supposedly
stomach-protecting ingredients bothered me more than the stronger NSAIDs with
no such ingredients.
On a slight tangent, all of the NSAIDs seem to give me burping
problems.  No other side effects, only gas.  I don't mind it much, but my hubby
finds it gross.  Do you guys have similar problems, or know of any over the
counter burp "relief"?  Things like Tums don't help so it doesn't seem to be an
acid problem.

Sharon, I find that Maalox tablets work best for me.

I've looked it up on rx list and Arthrotec actually had a higher incidence of
all GI side effects than diclofenac (Voltaren) alone.  It is interesting that
the misoprostol can cause problems in so many people when it's actually
supposed to be protecting the stomach.  The highest incidence was of "stomach
pain" and that is what I had with it from the very first pill.  It was better
if I took OTC ranitidine before the Arthrotec, but I prefer to be on an NSAID
that doesn't require me to take other medication to tolerate it - especially
as the salicylates were the only NSAID I'd had any adverse reaction to over
19 years, up until they pulled Bextra off the market last spring.

Multi-symptom Rolaids helps me a lot with gas and I've used Mylicon in the
past for severe gas problems.  I don't have much trouble with most NSAIDs,
but I will say gas was a HUGE problem for me with relafen, enough so that I'd
go without an NSAID before I'd take relafen again.

Just did a Google on "misoprostol"... Eek!

First hit got me...

...and

...didn't look too reassuring either.

Guess what my main med is? D'oh! 8(

I have been on Arthrotec 75 twice a day for a couple of months now,
and it is working fine on me, certainly better than the Celebrex did.
I was taking Bextra and was very upset when they took it off the
market, but I find Arthrotec even better for me than the Bextra was.
I also take Nexium, so I don't know if the Arthrotec would bother me.
Even on Nexium, the Celebrex gave me some ulcers.  I think they're
gone.  The Gastroenterologist found them - I haven't had any symptoms
that I know of.
