Mom was supposed to be discharged from the hospital on Monday. Her
kidney function had slightly improved and she was doing ok. In fact,
the dr had written orders for her to be discharged when she started not
talking again. We've seen this before (about 10 times) where she starts
having difficulty with language and then becomes unresponsive. She's
eventually come out of it. The doctors vary on what they think is
causing it. This time however, her MRI shows she's had 3 small strokes
recently. She is unable to talk or respond right now. Ahe's having
difficulty swallowing so they are putting her on IV fluids until they
can get a swallow study. Each time this has happened it's a little
worse and I'm always afraid she won't come out of it. She always
has.....Prayers please? Thanks! DianeW

I'm heading to the hospital to sign a DNR on Mom. They inserted a NG
tube this morning to give her meds and liquids. I've told them for now
no feeding tube with out my permission and they said they didn't need
m6y permission for an NG tube. They are also moving her to a monitored
floor which is pointless I would think with a DNR. I'll have to see
what they say when I get there. There is so much I don't know about
this. DianeW

I went through all of that with my Mom. I hope you have her living will
and health care proxy signed designating you as the person to make
decisions. I was so glad that we had those things, Otherwise they would
not have let me make the decisions that had to be made.
I'm keep your family in my prayers, Diane.
Hugs,
Carole

So sorry you and your Mom are having to go through this. If you need
guidance, you might contact someone from Hospice that can guide you through
the maze.

This is such a hard time. Sending prayers and hugs.
See if you can get a hospice consult. They will be more forthright about how
you can go about enforcing your mom's wishes.
Hospital personnel are geared towards fighting the fight. As such, they
always want to try the next option. Letting nature do its thing is very hard
on the practitioner (it makes them feel helpless) and usually against
hospital unspoken practices (liability concerns). Hospice will let you know
your mom's rights, share with you the language the medical personnel need to
hear, and also support you through this process. Even if you decide you
don't want to withdraw treatment completely, they will help you to weigh the
options presented by the medical staff.
Hospice was a god send when my dad was ill. We always wished we had brought
them in earlier.
Wishing you strength and love,
Adelle
