Mom's dialysis reprieve

The dr called and explained why he canceled Mom's dialysis. He said the
24 hour urine came back showing that the kidney function was at 19% and
they don't do dialysis until 15%. Amazing what a few points and lots of
prayers can do.  :)  He said there is no real prediction of when she
will need it. Could be two weeks or two months. He's adding Vitamin D
and Procrit to help her anemia and changing her diuretic to a stronger
med that will allow her to take medicine that does the same thing for
less pill. Still not good for the kidneys but a less is more idea I
suppose. So at least we have a reprieve for now. I know it's just a
matter of time but at least not now.

Thank you all so much for your prayers for Mom. I really appreciate you
keeping her in your hearts. It means a lot to me.

Or two years.  My mother stayed at 19% for over 2 years and died before ever
going on dialysis.  Progression of the disease is not uniform or
predictable.  The key will be managing her diet and other illnesses very
closely, particularly blood sugar and protein intake.

Good luck!

Walt - I had read about the protein intake restriction and ask the doc about
it today and they said they don't follow that anymore. Which surprised me
because all the websites say things about it still!  Thanks....

That surprises me as well.  When Micah was in kidney failure two years ago
he was put on a protein restricted diet (no more than 70 grams/day).  Is
there another nephrology group in your area?  Maybe a second opinion would
be appropriate.

I was thinking about that. But things can change in two years it's
true. He did change her meds and restrict her fluids. DianeW

you might try calling a local dialysis clinic, like davita, to find out what
the new norm about protein intake is, across the board, for their patients.
things change so quickly in medical protocols these days.

Well it will give you time to gently ask your mother
what she wants to do. Hope she is stable for a bit.
