Hi everyone,
I've been on Plaquenil since June (for UCTD)I had an acute episode that
lasted 3 months Jan-Mar with terrrible pain and inflammation. Since
I've been on the Plaquenil I haven't had much pain or inflammation
however 3 weeks ago I went back to school (I'm a teacher) and I'm sick
now with a flu/sinus infection. I haven't had a cold/sinus infection
for 15 years and the last time I had the flu was in 1999. I'm wondering
if it's because of the Plaquenil? And if so if I have to use something
stronger like Methotrexate will I be sick all the time? This is
miserable, it seems to be 6 of one, half dozen of the other....And one
of my friends today told me, "You're very delicate aren't you?"

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Because I also teach (first grade) I thought that I would respond to
your post. I took plaquenil from 1970 to about 2001. I did not have
sinus problems in that time. I have also been on mtx since 1995, and
again did dot experience sinus problems. I went on remicade in 2000,
and then did have sinus problems big time. I have stopped remicade and
gone on enbrel and now once again now that school is in session have
sinus or allergies or some wierd combination. During the teaching year
I am chronically hoarse as well to add to the mix.

I don't believe that it could be the plaquenil because it is a
relatively mild drug. I can not pretend to be any authority on that so
suggest that you ask your doctor. I can not remember sinus problems
listed in any side effect profile.

I have been thinking about what factors contribute to the sinus
problem. Is it partially the season, with additional pollens and so on
on the air?  Is it the classroom with its dust and recycled air?

Hi Isla,
I don't know about Plaquenil, but I do know that methotrexate and
Enbrel are immunosuppressents(sp??), squashing down the immune system.
I think Plaquenil is as well, but not sure.
RB, could it be the children with their germy hands?  LOL!!
Since I am on Azulfidine, prednisone, methotrexate and Enbrel,( all
immunosuppressents) I have become a freak about germs-I keep Lysol in
my desk, which I use to spray phones, door knobs and keyboards around
where I work. I wash my hands A LOT. I handle a lot of paperwork that
passes through numerous hands before it reaches me. Sometimes, I spray
that too.
So far, it has worked for me. Maybe some of that instant hand sanitizer
would help??

I know that Plaquenil is a mild immunosuppressant and I'm just
wondering is what I got (cold or allergies turned into bronchitis now
and losing my voice etc) is as a result of the medication since my
immune system is usually in overdrive and I never get sick. In fact
because I never get normal colds/flus I think people think I'm a
hypochondriac. (I also have a thyroid autoimmune illness.)Anyway I work
with small children and they're always dripping with something and I
can't afford to miss any days since I'm already only working day to day
due to health problems and pay for my own health ins ($520/month) what
a mess! I do wash my hands constantly and never touch anything near my
face, I'm like Howard Hughes!
